To the editor:
This is the time of year when we can curl up under a warm blanket with a drink and reflect on what we have accomplished and be objective with ourselves about the things we need to change. Try to imagine a world without violence. Imagine a world where neighbors help each other in difficult times. Imagine a global neighborhood where people under an oppressive government are offered a hand instead of war so they can claim their freedom. It isn't that hard to imagine, and it is possible.
America is a nation blessed with freedom and millions of resources. We have many options at our disposal when it comes to solving conflicts. We are an intelligent nation. However, our politicians often do not represent the growing voice of American citizens for peace and instead chose to spend money to crush smaller nations rather than extend a hand to them or to American veterans, poor school districts or hard-working families. We have the resources. We have the power. What is more patriotic then being proud of your country -- proud enough to share what you have so others can lift up their heads as well?
Peace is possible, and peace is patriotic. This season take the time to look at the faces of those in need and think about what you can do to make peace possible in your corner of the world and around the world.
