To the Editor:
A few weeks back the Southeast Missourian noted that the National Guard is an important part of America's military design. You rightfully noted the cost effectiveness of the Guard. You correctly pointed out our unique dual role under the Constitution as both a federal first-line military force and a state emergency force. We would like to add one thought, that partnership makes the Guard possible.
Citizens of Southeast Missouri have long shown an understanding of the Guard and supported their hometown Guard units. Guard service is a tradition across the region. Families are deeply involved in supporting their soldiers~ family members. Employers in the area go the extra mile to help their employees serve effectively as citizen soldiers.
Your role is important also. The Southeast Missourian and other media in the area consistently do an excellent job of informing people about their National Guard. Complimentary or critical, media attention to military subjects is vital in our society where the armed forces are civilian controlled and must be responsive to the public that pays the bills.
Thank you for your interest in the Missouri National Guard and the role you play in making our efforts successful.
