To the editor:
Remember how Gomer Pyle often said, "Thank you, thank you, thank you" in response to kindness? I wonder what he would have said today if he were as overwhelmed as I am from the kindness, love and generosity showered upon me for reaching 100 years of age. I do feel honored and, indeed, grateful for having the flag flown over the U.S. Capitol in honor of my birthday. I do appreciate the many kind words from the president and his wife, warm congratulations from Gov. Matt Blunt and a mountain of cards, all of which call for a thanks deeper than the ocean and wider than the sea.
It is difficult to find words of gratitude and appreciation to thank Shirley Young for giving me such a beautiful and memorable 100th birthday party with the generous help of my nephew, Dr. Walter Kempe; his daughter, Paula Marie Kempe; plus the generous help of Lisa Limbaugh -- all of whom are credited for the lovely and unforgettable party.
So appreciated are the spiritual words of Pastor Alsinger, lovely songs by Adam Reinagle, Charlie Vaughn and Vickie Baren, all accompanied by Gloria Shumer.
Much gratitude certainly goes to the kind Missourian reporter who so excellently gave the account of my life and party.
To me, the party marked the end of a perfect day. No words could ever express my deep appreciation. Like Gomer Pyle, I will say, "Thank you, thank you, thank you."
PAULA E. KEMPE, Cape Girardeau
