To the editor:
David Limbaugh has written a column, "Prayers for Terri," regarding the very public legal battle to remove Terri Schiavo's feeding tube. Given the complexities of this emotional case, Limbaugh's opinions seem one-sided. Here are some facts from the original trial.
Terri suffered a heart attack over 15 years ago due to the harmful affects of bulimia. Her brain was severely damaged and continued to deteriorate. Most of the portion of the brain that controls conscious thought is gone, replaced by spinal fluid. Doctors say Terri has no thoughts or feelings, the damage is irreversible and her lifelike appearances are involuntary reflexes. She is sustained by a surgically inserted feeding tube.
Her husband is not estranged. After the tragedy he continued to live with his in-laws and provided care and therapy for years. Believing his wife would not want to exist this way, he has continued to fight for her soul despite incredible pressure and abuse.
This case has been a public football for several years. It is truly tragic regardless of the outcome. Limbaugh's innuendo and short take on his beliefs do not help at any level. Given few of his opinions have legal or medical support, it can only be assumed this was an emotional reaction on his part. I hope he re-evaluates his thinking.
