Sandy Gibbons, immunization coordinator with the Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center, told the Southeast Missourian that she's found many people are unaware of the effects of pertussis. She said that while adults may have mild symptoms, infants can suffer from several major health issues -- potentially leading to death.

The Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center is offering the vaccination free of charge over the next few weeks. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today it will be offered at the Delta Community Building. Other times include: 1 to 6 p.m. July 26, Osage Centre in Cape Girardeau; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 2, Cape Girardeau Fire Station No. 2 (drive-thru); 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 9, Jackson Fire Station (drive-thru).
