By all accounts, folks who went to Gov. Bob Holden's inauguration in Jefferson City, Mo., had a fine time. But even with special events for children -- special guests on a special day -- you have to wonder if spending $1 million for parties was such a good idea.

Taxpayers picked up about $120,000 of the inauguration bill, and Holden raised another $800,000 through private donations.

From whom? Lobbyists? Generous benefactors who might want special attention from the governor's office?

And do these donations have to be reported just like campaign contributions?

Taking the oath of office is a pretty simple affair. The trappings of a million-dollar inauguration suggest a willingness to spend. And spend. And spend.
