Most of Cape Girardeau's citizens pay for and maintain their living quarters. Some rent. Some own.

Our city is where we live. Paying for quality police and fire personnel plus equipment should be considered part of our expense for living in a quality city.

If we don't, who can blame good police officers and firefighters from going to surrounding towns for more money with less strain from being spread too thin by being understaffed and underequipped?

Each of us who fee this way and don't vote for the slight sales-tax increase Tuesday have actually voted against the issue by doing nothing.

Ultimately, if we do nothing, our city will become noted for doing nothing. We'll sink into a being a second-class city. New jobs and businesses don't move into second-class cities.

Ultimately, you get what you pay for. Please make the effort to vote yes Tuesday.
