Each year some 4,000 communities across the nation, including Cape Girardeau, celebrate the important work of the local Boys & Girls Clubs -- saving and changing young lives every day all year long.

At this time each year, our local Boys & Girls Club undertakes a campaign to increase support from individuals within the community. It is important for every caring citizen to give encouragement and hope to our local kids.

When it comes to our kids, we think of the home, a solid family life and caring parental guidance. But for too many children in America, including Cape Girardeau, this scenario isn't reality. Research indicates that the hours of 3 to 8 p.m. are difficult times for young people, when crime involving youths doubles as they leave school and return to empty homes and neighborhood streets idle and unsupervised.

One answer is to provide after-school and summer programs in Cape Girardeau and Jackson. Neighborhoods with effective programs minimize youth-related problems. Children are safe. They are involved in life-enhancing experiences and meaningful challenges. They are supervised and taught by caring adults.

We at the Boys & Girls Club of Cape Girardeau believe every child should be involved in a safe, structured, after-school and summer program. As parents, educators and community leaders, we need to stop and consider what can be done to make this idea a reality.

Consider volunteering or financially support the Boys & Girls Club of Cape Girardeau by calling 335-7141. It is an investment in our community's children, our most precious resource.
