The Southeast Missouri counties of Cape Girardeau, Perry and Bollinger continue to show signs of a healthy economy. Unemployment consistently hovers around 4 or 5 percent in Cape Girardeau and is slightly higher in Perry and Bollinger counties.
Unfortunately, low unemployment and a growing economy can make for too few workers to fill a growing number of jobs. Employers are seeking workers in the in all types of fields.
Almost a fourth of area companies interviewed say they plan to add to their payrolls through October, November and December. Only 10 percent expect layoffs.
That economic expansion is good news for the majority of residents who already are in the work force. They can enjoy the luxury of checking out new job opportunities and a possible employment move while collecting a steady paycheck. The competition for workers is bound to drive up wages in many fields as well.
