While economic signals are still mixed around the nation, there is one indicator that shows the economy in the Cape Girardeau area is holding its own. Sales tax revenue for the city is down less than 1 percent so far in 2010 compared to last year. This indicates sales are steady for area merchants.
The local figures compare with much larger declines in sales-tax revenue across Missouri, contributing to an overall decrease in year-to-date state revenue of 12.7 percent.
Meanwhile, the Kansas City area appears to be making a strong recovery. The city is listed as one of the top economic bright spots in the country.
Cape Girardeau officials cite the area's business diversity -- retail, entertainment, health care, education, industry -- for the positive economic indicators. The fact that Cape Girardeau is a regional hub for the area between St. Louis and Memphis also is an important factor.
One way to help the local economy, according to chamber of commerce president John Mehner, is to check with local merchants before making online purchases. "Remember, online companies aren't providing jobs here or paying taxes here," Mehner said.
A strong local economy benefits all of us, and we all can contribute our support.
