Ron Paul, Barney Frank and I agree that maintaining massive troop bases within the borders of economic competitors South Korea, Japan and the European Union is against America's best interest.

Paul and Frank, two congressmen with nearly opposite political philosophies, recently pointed out that our nation is borrowing money from China to continue subsidizing the defense of these nations. Since starting our campaign last September, I have advocated for reduction of manning at these large bases as one solution to reduce the federal deficit.

I became personally aware of our subsidies of European defense when I served in England flying U-2s during the Cold War. Using our higher than stateside housing allowance, my family rented an English house. We shopped in the local economy using my American paycheck to pay the English value added tax. Local British companies contracted to provide base services at American taxpayer expense.
