The Southeast Missourian is seeking nominations for its annual Spirit of America Award. The award goes to the person who exemplifies the character and community service that helps shape America: patriotism, loyalty, giving, entrepreneurial spirit and much more.

Civic clubs and other organizations such as sports leagues and school groups can nominate someone for the award. The organization that nominates the winner will receive a $1,000 donation from the Southeast Missourian.

Clubs and organizations in Cape Girardeau, Perry, Bollinger, Stoddard and Scott counties in Missouri and Union, Pulaski and Alexander counties in Illinois are urged to make nominations. The deadline is June 4.

The Southeast Missourian has sponsored the Spirit of America Award since 2003. Previous winners: 2003 John "Doc" Yallaly, 2004 Dr. Dan Cotner, 2005 Melvin Gateley, 2006 Neal Edwards, 2007 James Harnes Sr., 2008 Jane Randol Jackson, 2009 Harry Rediger.

The previous winners exemplify the ideals of the Spirit of America, and they are contributors to all the good things in our communities that make us proud to live in Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois.

Nomination forms are available online at semissourian.com. The award will be given out at the start of the Fourth of July fireworks at Arena Park.
