I HAVE A complaint but I'm sure it won't get printed because it's a complaint against the Missourian. We pay for our Missourian. This morning when we received Wednesday's addition, there was no Town & Country grocery ad from Jackson. I checked on the free papers and it was in there. So we called the Missourian. We were told that only the free papers get it. We called Town & Country and Town & Country said that is not true. What the heck is going on? Thank you.
I'M SURPRISED TO see such a big article about Dr. Mark Scully in Sunday's Missourian. He certainly didn't deserve this recognition, especially since he would not appear at the recent inauguration of President Kayla Stroup. All the other past presidents were there except Dr. Scully. If he cared so much about Southeast Missouri State University he would have had the welfare of the university at heart and would have appeared with the other past presidents. I was disappointed in Dr. Scully for not participating in that ceremony and I think he did a disservice to the university and to himself.
I HAVE JUST read the profile on Mark Scully in the Southeast Missourian Nov. 18. I have a few observations to make about that profile. I noted that of the living presidents at Southeast Missouri, Mark Scully alone did not attend Kayla Stroup's inauguration. His absence was conspicuous. Why do you now give us a profile of this man? There's absolutely no reason to do it simply because Scully retired in the summer of 1975, not in November of 1975. There is no reason to review his presidency at this time other than an attempt to sandbag Kayla Stroup's presidency with a retrospective on Scully. Mr. Bliss should interview faculty members to get a perspective on Scully's presidency. They would certainly be able to give him a different point of view than the one we get in the newspaper and the one that we have always gotten in the newspaper about that man and his presidency. Much has been made about the growth that occurred during Scully's presidency, however, no one has ever looked at what was happening to university's and colleges across the United States during his presidency. When he was president colleges and universities across the nation were bursting apart at the seams because the students were the babies that has been born after WWII and yet we're told that Scully did a lot for the university. Why don't you get a real perspective and do some comparison of in terms of context and comparison with other universities? Delyte Morris, president of SIU at the same time, led SIU to real growth because he had vision. He didn't have vision of a public school administration.
I'VE BEEN wondering why none of the politicians have brought up the fact that Congress has given themselves another 35 percent raise effective Jan. 1. Ralph Nader was on "Inside Edition" and he said the Republicans and Democrats both had signed a pact that if anyone running against an incumbent brought this out before election they would not receive any money. This is really a sad state of affairs when our government can use strong-arm tactics to keep someone from telling the truth. You can call 1-900-786-4040 if you wish to register a complaint. The call costs $2. Thank you.
I WAS JUST watching "Behind the Headlines" and Steve Bone, park director, was on there, and he was talking about how they had spent a couple of thousand dollars on an inflatable dog for kids to play on at Central Pool. This seems to me to be very expensive for something for kids to play on when kids only pay 50 cents to go to the pool. It's going to take 5,000 kids to play on this dog before it ever brings in money for the city, which is why he said the dog was purchased in the first place. Thank you.
I WOULD LIKE to know if Speak Out could find out how many of the council members who voted no on the liquor license because of the small church's opposition have interests in liquor establishments of their own. I know that Mayor Rhodes does and I think that the vote was in very, very poor taste. Thank you.
John, you might want to check the files for a story Mark wrote, I believe this spring, when this item first was brought before the council. Neighborhood residents packed the council chambers to express their opposition to the bar going in. Council members who this month again voted the item down, cited the past neighborhood opposition as reasons they were against it.
