PERTAINING TO President Clinton's vote-getting, let's get real. I don't care what his angle is for wanting to get votes, just do what's best for the country. I suppose these Republicans think what's best for the country is cutting national health care for the elderly so their Medicare has to suffer and pay more money which they don't have to help the rich man get richer. If they think that's best for the country, they're kidding themselves. I suppose they think the Republican party is all heart and not out after votes too. It's the Republican way of wanting to damage Medicare. They want to see it wither on the vine. They've always been against health care. They've always been against Social Security. Every chance they got, they would cut it. I don't see how they think it's best for the country to make it harder on the poor and to make the rich richer. If they think that's the good Republican way, thank God I am not a Republican.
HOW DO these right-wing Republicans get off on going off on people for not serving in Vietnam when so many of these big shots are nothing more than big-talking draft dodgers?
I'M CALLING about the site of the proposed new federal building. Of all the sites mentioned to date, the one the makes the most sense to me is the block due west of the present city hall. Dr. James A. Kinder suggested this in a letter to the editor. I can't add anything to his letter. He said it the best.
I AM completely disgusted with the Republicans and the distorted way that they choose to look at things. They have a lot of nerve to blame Bill Clinton and the Democrats for the awful deficit in our country. Ronald Reagan, the most wasteful president we ever had, is the person responsible for putting our country in such a terrible financial crisis. While he was the president, the national debt increased more rapidly than at any other time in the history of our country. Now the Republicans expect a Democrat, Bill Clinton, to straighten out the mess they got us into. Aren't the Republicans ever able to accept responsibility for anything they do? I guess they always need to depend on us Democrats to bail them out of trouble.
CLINTON INSISTS we can't balance the budget in seven years. Just a few weeks ago we all heard him talk about doing just that. Now he is farther along in his campaign mode. He wants to look strong and powerful. Shutting down the government will help people to forget how wishy-washy he has been. And if he can convince enough people that he isn't to blame, it would ensure his re-election. Medicare, Social Security and other programs that help people are not being cut. Only the amount of the raise is less. If government agencies want a 12 percent raise and get a 9 percent raise, they call it a cut. They never believe it's actually a raise. Congress is trying to save our country from being bankrupt. It's time to stop spending more money than we have. All the money we pay in taxes is spent, especially if the government gets it. Now other retirement funds and trust funds are being raided. Think about the future generations. Don't let one person bankrupt our country.
I AM extremely tired of the continued and deliberate lies of the Democratic Party. Every day I read Speak Out. Every day I see comments from misinformed citizens criticizing the Republicans for wanting to cut Medicare and other social programs when in fact the Republicans are doing no such thing. The Republicans are only doing what they promised they would do: balancing the budget. For some reason this is unacceptable to our president and the Democratic Party. They telling senior citizens that Republicans want to terminate their Medicare when in reality the Republican bill would increase benefits by 6 percent annually. How is this considered a cut? The Democrats can continue their lies, but in the end the American public will see what they're all about: anti-family, tax and spend, big government.
PRESIDENT CLINTON is really wanting to be re-elected. He is playing politics to the fullest extent. He knows if there are things taken away from the people they wouldn't vote for him.
I REMEMBER when Clinton ran for president, he said he'd balance the budget in five years. Well, what gives here? As far as Medicare, goes, there are no cuts in Medicare. Clinton may be using the new math. Why don't they tell the truth about this?
THERE ARE two things I enjoyed Sunday morning. First was Peter Kinder's comments in the paper and then playing the tape on Rush Limbaugh's show last night, which was tremendous.
I BELIEVE the Republicans are serious about the budget reduction. Will they get rid of their fruity Newt and their tax breaks to their contributors? Then I'll take them seriously. Not until then.
I THINK that the two local speakers for service stations here in Cape did a poor job of trying to explain away the high prices in Cape compared to other cities nearby. One local station selling gas for $1.05 here in Cape has a station in Festus/Crystal City that sells for 85 cents. He also has a station in South County in St. Louis for 82 cents. So why should it be 20 cents difference here in Cape and up there in St. Louis and Festus?
THE FEDERAL government closed down, but the big wheels in Washington are still being paid.
THE GOVERNMENT running out of money may be a blessing in disguise. I wish there was a way we could permanently keep the human parasites off the payroll. It might help balance the budget.
CONCERNING the Riverside/Jackson merger that failed: We are progress-minded, otherwise we would not have been established Riverside Regional Library some 42 years ago. At that time, Jackson would not hear of combining efforts to establish a library. They would extend service to taxpayers only, but not the remainder of the county. Neither would Cape. So we set out to progressively help ourselves. I am very tired of reading and hearing about the library boundary lines which were set up to protect county libraries where cities would not extend their services. It's always the same old story. The selfishness of cities and the lack of foresight are the reasons for Jackson's library problem now.
