I'M A senior citizen, and I want to ask my fellow senior citizens who have children and grandchildren to back the effort the balance the budget in the United States. We must all make sacrifices to help our country. JFK said it best: "Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country."
IT'S PRETTY pathetic that all the talk about President Clinton being a gutless draft dodger comes from most of the right-wing leaders who themselves wrangled one campus deferment after another during the Vietnam War.
I JUST wanted to say, when is Bill Emerson going to quit being a party to giving our western lands for $5 an acre to the mining companies? It's just a disgrace.
I WOULD like to make a comment about how the Democrats are playing their dirty tricks again. If I remember right, this budget is almost broke, and the Republicans are coming up with an idea. I work with a lot of elderly people. They say they would rather spend $6 to $7 more a month for Medicare so that they can have it. Otherwise, wasn't it the own Democrats' own surgeon general, Jocelyn Elders, who said, "Why should we spend one more cent on the elderly. After all they're going to die of something anyway." And this is the same women who said we ought to cut a lot of funding off for the older people and spend more of it on AIDS. Remember it's the Democrats who don't even have a plan. And during the election, wasn't it Bill Clinton who said we'll come up with a balanced budget in four years and then he flip-flopped and changed it to five and now he's flip-flopping and calling for 10 years. Bill Clinton doesn't have a plan. The Republicans do. I think the Republicans are doing what is right.
