I THINK the Republican hankering about the shutting down of the government is a lot of hypocrisy. This is precisely the kind of minimalist government that the Republicans and the Congress want to have. I would think they would be overjoyed that the government is going to be brought down to it's absolute essential services. I think the president here is the only one acting responsibly.
ABOUT Sunday's front page article about the gas prices where AAA said there's not enough competition in Cape to drive the prices down: I think that's bogus. All of Perryville, Farmington and Fredericktown combined have fewer gas stations than Cape Girardeau, and all these other towns seem to be able to lower their prices. And a tank truck driver told me Cape Girardeau pays less in transportation than the smaller towns do. I think what AAA had to say was wrong. There is enough competition in Cape. I think somebody's sticking and keeping their prices up there.
I AM sure it was quite an inspiration for the veterans marching down Broadway Saturday morning to see the empty streets and sidewalks, especially for the two van loads of vets from the Veteran's Home. People really forget very soon. In our church, Veteran's Day or any recognition of it wasn't mentioned. I know it was cold, but it was cold where some of us were serving also.
I'M GLAD to finally have an article in the paper about high gas prices in our area. I feel like it's probably among the highest in Missouri. I found the AAA spokesman's reasons weak. Do all gas stations in the state do not pay prices and yet they can have lower prices?
JACK STAPLETON'S opinion on redesigning license plates of Missouri is great, but I hope the new design will not be one to put the state down as some of the other states' designs do. Personally I like Show Me State.
SAME OLD disgusting politics and rhetoric as usual. Dole and Gingrich blame Clinton, and Clinton blames Republicans. We have no leadership. Get your budget done and finish all 13 appropriation bills. I didn't vote for Clinton, but Gingrich, Dole and Dick Armey are looking like arrogant people. The prospects of a choice between Dole and Clinton for president, God help us, are boring.
I THINK our commander-in-chief is now inhaling.
THIS IS to the person who's bothered about our so-called commander-in-chief sending U.S. troops to Bosnia. As for being upset that no one seems concerned about it, you're wrong. Most military folks are upset about how Bill and Hillary are abusing and destroying our military readiness. But merely complaining in Speak Out won't solve the problem. I've been raising hell about it for quite a while, demanding answers from elected officials, calling papers, local TV stations, and even recruiters. And if I must, I will actively protest sending our troops to Bosnia, especially as mercenaries of the United Nations. I believe it's unconstitutional, but Clinton doesn't care. And it may interest you to know that a U.S. Army troop is being court-martialed for refusing to wear U.N. colors or taking orders from U.N. commanders. That should infuriate you enough to do more than just call Speak Out about it.
IF CLINTON and Dole can't get together on this budget of the United States government and they let the country go into bankruptcy, I will not vote for them, either party, if there is a third party running. I will vote for anybody that is on the third party, and I will not vote for anybody that is in office seeking re-election, Democrats or Republicans, either one. If we can't get them together, then we can get them apart. And if the voters will hang with them, well, put these rascals right out of office.
I THOROUGHLY enjoyed Jack Stapleton's column validating Murphy's Law. Most of the state's license plates slogans are wonderful and perfectly suited for each particular state. It's too bad the committee from Missouri is having such a tough time coming up with a slogan because after all the Show Me must go on.
I JUST read about the government shutdown. It says some of the government agencies will be shut down like the Center for Disease Control. Does that mean like officials that are studying ways to fight the AIDS virus, and like polio and all those other disease that haven't found a cure for, are those areas going to be shut down also? I mean, people are dying and they want to shut down the government because of money. It's kind of stupid.
SO FEDERAL employees are going to get paid without working. Somebody please explain to me what's new about that.
