I DO hate to complain, but the new mural's colors are ugly. The work is really pretty, I mean the whole idea is nice, but I've never seen such nasty colors. I hate to comment about that, but they are really bad.
TO THE residents of Advance: Can you not see the forest for the trees? First the police, now the firemen. I always thought progress was when you selected the best and moved forward, not to select the inferior and move backwards.
THIS O.J. Simpson trial was a disgrace to the law profession. The defense team tried to convict everyone but O.J., and the jury never even considered the two people who were brutally murdered. Talk about racist, this was it.
I'VE BEEN out of town a couple of weeks, but I was absolutely taken aback by the monstrosity on our courthouse lawn. I had no idea what it was, this giant marker. I went around to look at it and was shocked to see the Confederate Soldiers of America memorial. What really concerns me about it, not only does it detract from the overall picturesque setting of the courthouse, but also I don't know if that's the type thing we want to hold up so large. It does take away from the courthouse and the sculpture of the fountain and the overall view. I'm surprised that something like this happened. I'm sorry I was out of town for a while. I find it just a whole detraction to the community.
THERE WAS a comment made about people staring at you when you've got food stamps because they think they're better than they are. I've got a son and daughter-in-law, both of them working and making only $6 an hour and raising a daughter and they don't get food stamps. If people would stay in school and get their diplomas they wouldn't have to get a GED and they could read. It's not the people's responsibility to take care of these things for them. They have to take the initiative, some individual responsibility, to stay in school to educate themselves, and work and assume their own responsibility and not expect the government and the rest of us taxpayers to provide food stamps and all the other things.
WHEN JOHNNIE Cochran was making his closing arguments, he dealt the race card from the bottom of the deck, and the fact that he had bodyguards from the Nation of Islam guarding him made Mark Fuhrman look like a choir boy.
THIS IS in regards to Jay Eastlick's Oct. 7 column. I would just like to inform Mr. Eastlick that the word reasonable doubt means to infer or conclude, and that is all the jury had to do in order to acquit Mr. Simpson. I am so tired of hearing all this fuss about race and how Mr. Simpson got off because he was black and had a majority black jury. I would just like to know how many African-Americans have been convicted by all-white juries. Then Mr. Eastlick goes on to mention the Nation of Islam bodyguards that Johnnie Cochran has. He calls Johnnie Cochran a racist for having Nation of Islam bodyguards. This man needs to protect himself. He's had numerous death threats, and why not be protected by your own?
I'M CALLING on behalf of graduates of Southeast Missouri State University. We feel it's very unfortunate the institution does not support other athletic programs on campus. There was a volleyball match before the football game, and there was no advertisement to let us know as people coming in for homecoming weekend that we could have also attended a volleyball match.
I HAVE just finished reading the column about Pope John Paul II written by Peter Kinder. I wish to thank him for bringing to light and bringing to the forefront all of the things about Pope John Paul II. It's very rare that we see a column along these lines on a religious leader. I want to thank him and hope he continues his good work.
EVERYONE OUT there, please listen. The trial is over. The verdict has been given. Don't you know that postmortems are held at the morgue? Now leave it off. Let's get on about our business.
THE YEAR 2000 will roll by, and the media will still be talking about the O.J. trial. Enough is enough.
AS A recipient of Social Security I would like to state that I would be glad to give up part of my cost-of-living raise. Now let me ask you this, do the members of Congress get a cost-of-living raise each year? I believe they do. How much are they willing to give up?
WE ARE appalled at the news that millions of our Medicare dollars are funded into training foreign doctors in our hospitals, and then they return to their own countries. We need an explanation of this. Now they're going to cut the cost-of-living adjustment to senior citizens. We go in the hole each year to increase costs in Medicare, not mentioning raises in most all of our bills. We suggest starting cutting huge raises in Washington, cut welfare and so many other wastes in our government. Remember we will be in a fix in '96 if you don't quit targeting the senior citizens.
I SEE our dear politicians are at it again. When all of these people were running for re-election, I definitely heard them say hands off of Social Security. Now they are trying to fool around with our small cost-of-living increase. Are these politicians going to eliminate their cost-of-living increase for their salaries? I think not. I am so sick and tired of hearing these politicians talk about cutting people's programs in order to balance the budget. I have not heard one thing about stopping this foreign aid that they are giving away to these foreign countries who will turn around and spit in our face if they get half the chance. Politicians, you'd better wake up, or you will be without a job. Get off of Social Security and leave these senior citizens alone. If you think our Social Security is too extravagant, try checking with some of our doctors and pharmacies and drug companies. I went to my doctor the other day, and he had raised his office fee from $23 to $34. Now if you think $7 to $8 is too much for a Social Security increase, put this down on your paper and figure it out. I will vote against anyone, Democrat or Republican, who votes to cut this Social Security cost-of-living increase.
