For or against?

I WAS reading the article about the proposed construction of 59 rental homes at the corner of Bertling and Sprigg streets. Bill Rader and Birdie Rader were objecting to that. Bill Rader was quoted as saying that it looks like public housing. I also understand that our secretary of state, Bekki Cook, and her husband, John Cook, who live in that area are also objecting to that. Both those couples are strong Democrats. It seems as if their position is they are always in favor of public housing, but just don't build it next to their house.

Politics in church

JESSE JACKSON Jr. is entering the political race for Congress to replace Rep. Mel Reynolds, who had to resign because of his sexual episodes with an under-aged girl who had worked for him. I met Saturday with 400 cheering, chanting supporters in the sanctuary of the Salem Baptist church in Chicago. His daddy, Jesse Jackson Sr., was there to make a big nominating speech for him and all that kind of jazz. This was billed as fund-raiser, news conference, political rally and a revival meeting. We have President Clinton who runs around the country speaking in the big black Baptist churches making speeches. Have we heard of a GOP candidate or official doing something like what these two men have done? All hell would break loose over separation of church and state. The so-called Christian Right is going to take over the government because you are speaking at their meetings. Let's see the media and liberal approach to this be consistent. If you are going to criticize one, like the Republicans, why don't you get after some of these others who use churches?

Campaign visit

WHEN RONALD Reagan came to the Show Me Center the Democrats complained that he was on a political campaign. I would like to ask the Democrats what's the difference between Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, who did the same thing in Illinois? Bill Clinton was doing nothing but campaigning at the Southern Illinois campus.

Entitlement waste

I AM an old man, 82, and I think we should cut Social Security waste and some of the entitlements, especially since we raise it every year or two. Our children are going to need Social Security too. If you want to know what is going on, read your last month's issue of Reader's Digest. And this president we got, all he wants to do is spend, spend, spend. He has never worked, and he doesn't know what it is to save. I think he is the worst I can remember, and I have seen a lot come and go.

Stay-at-home mom

TO THE working mother who seemed to be so angry and upset. There are a lot of mothers out there who don't have to work. I am a mother who stays at home, and my husband doesn't make much money. But we don't buy our kids expensive, brand-name shoes or expensive cloths, and we don't own two big cars that cost more than some people's houses. Yes, moms can stay home in a lot more cases. They just need to learn to budget their money. It costs a lot of money to pay for day care and for a second car and insurance. It costs money to work. If you do your money right, then a lot of time mothers could stay home. Not all mothers, but some could.

Kinder's columns

I REALLY enjoy reading Peter Kinder's columns. He is a man who speaks the truth. I admire him for standing up against the way America is going wayward. I am glad we got people like Peter Kinder. If we didn't have, it would be a good place to leave.

Limit government

PRESIDENT CLINTON tells me that I should spend my money to educate our students, to pay for college. The job of the federal government is to provide for common defense, deliver the mail and perhaps interstate highways. Everything else is wrong. They should not take 20 percent out of my wages a week to do with it what they please. I get nothing out of it.

Parade safety

I AM so upset. I don't know where to start. The parade was ruined for me today by the adults and children who continually went to almost the middle of the road to watch the parade. Where were our police to enforce people to stay back on the curb as they usually do? We sure do miss Danny Niswonger, who use to do that so kindly but strongly and so well. Please, parents, make your children do what they should do. And, adults, set a good example.
