IF I have to listen to one more history revisionist or scholar debate the validity of dropping the atomic bomb, I'm going to declare Aug. 6 as Happy Hiroshima Day at my house. It will be a blowout barbecue. We built it. We used it. They deserved it. We won. Enough said.
REGARDING the decision not the fly the flags to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II: The 50th anniversary of the end of Korean War or the Vietnam War has not yet occurred. I say let's fly the flags here in Cape, especially on Monday, Aug. 14.
I WANT to respond to the comment about grass in the street. I can understand how one would find it unsightly when someone has mowed the yard and has thrown the grass in the street. As far as the remark concerning these people being arrested or even being talked to is an asinine statement. It seems to me that maybe this person is not too well educated and does not have anything better to do than complain about non-essential things. Maybe this person should consider minding his or her own affairs and go back to school and get an education and worry about more important things like recycling, politics, adult and child abuse. As far as my mowing my yard, my way has nothing to do with you, and if you don't like my way of mowing the yard, feel free to bring three things: yourself, your lawn mower and gas and mow the yard yourself.
I'M CALLING to thank our state senator, the honorable Peter Kinder, for his agreement with Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich's letter to the NRA promising no gun control legislation will move in committee or the floor of the House as long as he is speaker. In all of Clinton's lies and rhetoric where he accuses Gingrich of being bought by the NRA, he says nothing of all the campaign dollars he has received from all the major gun-control lobbyists. Campaign dollars work two ways. Clinton was definitely bought by gun control. Mr. Kinder will be receiving a letter to that affect thanking him for my beliefs in this.
FORGET about SEMO football. Bring on the SEMO basketball Indians.
KATHRYN COCHRAN, the lady that published so many historical articles through the years in the Missourian and the local papers has finally gone to her rest and reward. The last of her estate sales was held this week. Many of her fine antiques left Jackson for new homes elsewhere. Her newspaper articles and other writings concerning Jackson and Cape Girardeau County are all being viewed by complete strangers who do not care about our history and genealogy. Please, if anyone of you have articles of historical significance in your family about Cape Girardeau County, please make arrangements now to give them to the historical society for keeping and preservation. We must all cooperate to help preserve all early records. This is a part of our heritage.
