I READ that there are businesses that can't seem to find enough employees even during the summer when kids are out of school and looking for jobs. If those employers would take a look at the conditions in which their people work they might find out why they can't keep people working for them. Last year I worked for a small business in Cape Girardeau that had 30 employees within a four month time and they only employed five people to begin with. So you might see that they had quite a few people quitting, and the owner still hasn't figured out why. The same way with some of the other places. If you would talk to your ex-employees or listen to them while they are your employees and find out what the problem is, you could get some quality people to work for you and stay with you and eliminate the big turnover of employees that you have.
IF PRESIDENT Bill Clinton believes that the NRA should give back their money raised on their newsletter, maybe he should give back his money he's raised through his legal defense fund. We'll see who gives back what.
I'D LIKE to comment about all the people who are getting flooded out this year. They got flooded out in 1993. While I feel sorry for them, I really think that if I got flooded out once I wouldn't be around a second or third time. A lot of them have been around longer than that.
I JUST saw "Forrest Gump" and "The Shawshank Redemption," and "Forrest Gump" is a real yawner. I don't see how that got picture of the year, and I don't see how Tom Hanks got best actor. The actors in "The Shawshank Redemption," Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman got robbed. A lot of simple minds thought "Forrest Gump" was really good. Movies are like a box of chocolates: You never know what you are going to get.
I WOULD like to know why the mayor of Jackson was able to handpick the person to replace Alderman Kevin Sawyer who resigned. It seems to me as though the citizens of that ward should have had input as to who their new alderman would be just as though they were voting. Is this because of the ordinances, or is this just another good old boy network decision?
THIS IS for the people who wanted to know how to cut their lawn. You should cut your grass three inches, which is usually the highest setting on your mower. Most people have tall fescue lawns, and cut it short you will kill the plant, and weeds will take its place. One reason you want to cut high is it will help the plant survive warm weather. Also, if you mow low, especially if you don't have sharp blades, it will leave some terrible lines in the yard. It looks awful. The grass will grow no faster at 3 inches than it will at 1 inch or 2 inches.
IN RESPONSE to the person who wants to know the proper mowing heights for grasses. You don't shave the lawn. Two and a half inches for bluegrass and fescue lawns is recommended, with one inch for zoysia grass and Bermuda grass.
THE DRIVE in the back of the post office coming up from the side is paved and smooth, but the one coming on the north side is pretty rough. If you had a can of cream in there it would turn to butter by the time you got out.
I WOULD like to thank you for the excellent editorial Saturday concerning the miserable mess at Meadow Heights. You have hit the nail on the head with your objective analysis of the situation. With the continual allegations and petty complaints consuming most of the board meeting time, there has seldom ever been time or energy left to focus on the positive things needed to make our school district a great place to work with an atmosphere for learning.
I'M CALLING in reference to Peter Kinder's suggestion that the governor call a special session of the Missouri General Assembly. A few days ago in your paper, Jack Stapleton's story called attention to the exorbitant price tag that we are paying for Missouri bills this year, each one costing something like $150,000. I suggest that Kinder and the other senators tend to business next time and not waste so much time. It's ridiculous to have to have a separate session that would cost even more.
I'D LIKE to address the city ordinance on smoking inside a grocery store. I used to shop at a store here, but I can't get the manager to quit smoking cigarettes. I think it's very rude and irritating.
I'M A little tired of people griping about what they have heard Rush Limbaugh saying. If they want to know what Rush says, why don't they listen to his show and get it straight from him?
