I HAVE been reading in the paper the last few weeks about the city budget. If they would stop allowing personnel who work for the city to draw a vehicle allowance, they would probably save themselves a lot of money. What they should do is to let these people drive their own personal cars to work then take a city-owned vehicle from there. Also, if the city is going to operate the golf course and it continues to go into the red, they should get out of the golf course business...

Costly vehicles

I HAVE been reading in the paper the last few weeks about the city budget. If they would stop allowing personnel who work for the city to draw a vehicle allowance, they would probably save themselves a lot of money. What they should do is to let these people drive their own personal cars to work then take a city-owned vehicle from there. Also, if the city is going to operate the golf course and it continues to go into the red, they should get out of the golf course business.

Checking the checker

I HAVE been following the coverage about the city engineer for Jackson and I have two thoughts. When the engineer reviews his own plans, how much does he get paid? And how many times has he found mistakes?

Replace the trees

THIS IS concerning Dennis Scivally Park. I certainly hope the city plans to replace the trees that were destroyed in the last storm. Remember, this is not the first time the park has lost trees. A replacement is in order. Come on, city, let's get busy.

Four-digit codes

WHY DO we have to have three-digit area codes? Why not four-digit area codes? If the phone companies would just add one digit to the area codes, we would instantly add a thousand area codes, and we wouldn't have to worry about all this overlay stuff.

New NRA members

I JUST listened to the liberal news saying the NRA is going to lose memberships because of the letter they wrote. The only thing I can say is I am not a member of the NRA, but every time Bill Clinton opens his mouth you can be sure the NRA is getting another member. So he is the best they have. They don't have to waste their money in sending out any mail in the future, because Clinton is helping them every day.

Capsules are a help

I JUST want to comment on your "Our view" feature in your editorials. It's really great. The only thing I hope is people won't just read the capsulized version and will still continue to read the whole editorials. But you might even want to do this with some of your writers like Kinder and so forth.

Percentage increases

RUSH LIMBAUGH says Social Security people should not expect a 10 percent raise every year. Where does he get the 10 percent from? What percent do our congressmen get every year? Come on, Rush, figure that one out.

Fun fest dancing

I WAS reading in the Sunday paper about the Fun Fest for the senior citizens. My husband and I attended, and there was no mention of the wonderful dancing that was available to everybody. My goodness, we dancers did not sit and listen. We danced.

Close the campus

I WAS delighted to read about Jackson High threatening to close its campus during lunch hours. Great. But don't just threaten it, do it. Lock up these kids on campus and keep them there. All the majority of the students have time to do during lunch is break speed laws, disrupt the whole town with their boom boxes and trash other people's property. It's just another sign of today's failed parenting and liberal permissiveness. If the local junk food joints don't like it, they can cater at the school.

NRA is pro-government

SLICK WILLY Clinton continually tries to paint all gun owners in general and NRA members in particular as being anti-government radicals. Nothing could be further from the truth. The NRA has always strongly supported our government, particularly in times of war. Our military has adopted many of the NRA's firearms methods. The same goes for a lot of our nation's police forces. We will see who has the last word in November 1996.

Baby Richard

THIS IS about the little boy called Richard who was taken from his adoptive parents. This little boy has done nothing to deserve this punishment of being taken away from the only family that he has ever known. I hope the U.S. Supreme Court thinks it important enough to hear his case. Their address is U.S. Supreme Court, 1 First Street NE, Washington, D.C., 20543. Please write and help him and other children too.

Cardinal game cut off

I CAN'T believe it. On Sunday I was watching the Cardinals and the San Francisco Giants on KFVS-TV. Going into the ninth inning of a very exciting game, KFVS cut off the baseball game and went to "60 Minutes." I couldn't see the finish of a baseball game. I am upset. I think it's a disservice for people who started watching the game at 3. The had over three hours invested in the game, and they wanted to see the game. What do we get? Something that we have no control over. I called KFVS-TV and got absolutely no encouragement at all on why they would want to do this.
