GOP and Democrats

IN RESPONSE to the person who claims the Republicans have a plan and the Democrats have no plan: The Republicans wanted the Congress so bad they won, now they don't know what to do with it. They want the president to do their work for them. The president is not a congressman nor a senator. They also claim that the Democrats are only interested in getting re-elected. You bet they are. Things already appear to be in a mess. Medicare seems to be in jeopardy, along with school lunches and programs for AIDS and the poor. They've already managed to get things in a mess. So I guess the Democrats are going to have to take control just like they did in 1948.

Medical attention

TO SEN. Peter Kinder: In Illinois they have a Blue Cross plan that works with Medicare, but it's for Illinois residents only. Why don't you get busy and get us one over here? I'm sure you have people in your district who are without insurance or work for employers that don't furnish employee insurance or people on Medicare who need insurance but cannot afford it.

Dingle's rhetoric

QUICK. Who called the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms a jack-booted group of fascists who are perhaps as large a danger to American society as I can pick today. No it was not Rush Limbaugh, nor Gordon Liddy, nor Newt Gingrich, nor any Republican. It was not even a top official of the National Rifle Association. Instead it was house Democrat and diehard Clinton loyalist Rep. John Dingle of Michigan, who until January was chairman of the Energy Committee. Dingle was referring to the BATF's actions during the Waco tragedy. Maybe there's some truth to it after all.

Open communications

THE MISSOURIAN got it right with the editorial "Making the most of it" on Saturday. That was nice handling of the faculty survey. It promoted communication and growth both among university faculty and administrators and between the Missourian and the university. Please continue to promote such positive handling of information so that our community can cooperate in furthering our mutual growth.

Portable buildings

A FEW years back, I was wanting to open a car lot in Cape Girardeau with a portable building, which the city inspector told me was not permissible. I don't understand what's changed, because I know of two car lots that are operating with portable buildings. Just in the last two weeks another car lot has opened up on Independence selling cars and operating a business out of strictly a little portable building.

Hard work for benefits

I ALWAYS hear on the radio and TV and read in the papers they are wanting to cut Medicare and Social Security. I wonder if they would cut it if they had to walk four or five miles to work like we did 75 years ago. I can't imagine what in the world is wrong with this young generation. We didn't make the money they're making today. We didn't have the opportunity they have today.

Heidi's right

I'M CALLING about Heidi Nieland's column "Television talk shows teach lessons about life." I couldn't have said it better myself. I am so fed up with all the garbage they have on the talk shows, I won't even let my kids watch it. It's absolutely disgusting that people don't have anything better to do during the day than watch these things or be on the shows. So I'm with you 100 percent, Heidi.

Eastlick's praise

I DOUBT that Jay Eastlick's mom or the mother of his children will complain about no card on Mother's Day. His song of praise to the mothers in his life proves he's no curmudgeon. That article in the Southeast Missourian on Saturday raises a paean of joy in the readers' hearts.

Encourage recycling

WHY DOESN'T the city of Cape do more to encourage people to recycle glass, paper, cardboard and aluminum cans. Aluminum cans are currently bringing close to 50 cents a pound at junk yards. When people pitch them out with their garbage they are in affect raising everyone's monthly trash collection fee.

Teach penmanship

I'VE GOT a son with a master's degree, and I cannot read his handwriting. Will you please tell those people up there at the college to teach them a handwriting that you can read. He prints it, and I can't read it. One of the first things I learned when I went to school was how to write.
