WHEN I was in the military you had a weight standard, and if you were overweight they gave you so long to get rid of that weight and if you didn't you were discharged from the service. I see these cops down here in Scott City who are really overweight. If they had to go chase somebody there would be no way that they could. I just don't think they should be serving my community if they can't stay in the weight standard like anybody else who works for the government like I did in the service...

Weighty officers

WHEN I was in the military you had a weight standard, and if you were overweight they gave you so long to get rid of that weight and if you didn't you were discharged from the service. I see these cops down here in Scott City who are really overweight. If they had to go chase somebody there would be no way that they could. Some fat is needed

ALL THIS stuff about 2 percent milk having too much fat. My daughter's pediatrician warned her not to give her child skim milk. Children need that fat to grow.

Improved listening

BOY, WHAT a difference on KZIM's Talk of Cape these days. Finally there's somebody I can listen too. Thanks a lot.

Kids in the street

THIS IS in response to the two elderly ladies who addressed the city council Monday night and complained about the children playing on Oakley Drive. Pedestrians have the right of way on all public roads not, just city roads.

Easter, taxes, cleanup

I WOULD like to know who is responsible for picking the week after Easter and tax day for the spring cleanup week. To me it was a very poor choice with the Easter weekend and tax deadline in the same weekend. I wish they would reconsider and make another week where people can put out their stuff for garbage pickup.

Prohibition and drugs

WHY ARE we so much dumber than the voters of 60 years ago? It only took 13 years of money down the drain, corrupt politicians, police and judges, gang warfare, overcrowded prisons and lost tax money for these old geezers to realize that Prohibition was a miserable failure, and they voted to repeal the 18th Amendment of our Constitution. This war on drugs is also a miserable failure. How many trillions of dollars have we spent on drug raids, sting operations, Medicaid, Social Security disability and welfare payments for gunshot victims from drug tariff wars, radar planes over our coastlines, observation blimps along our southern border, drug-sniffing dogs, electronic heat sensing gear for finding indoor marijuana hot houses, helicopters to check poppy and cocoa fields in Central and South America, and marijuana crops in the U.S., hiring more police, building more and more prisons, paying public defenders to defend indicted druggies in court and then paying to guard, house and feed those convicts in those expensive new prisons? Why don't we get smart, legalize drugs, tax them like alcohol and spend the money on helping the addicts deal with their addiction with the same kind of programs available to alcoholics?

No senior week

I AM a high school senior at Cape, and I'd like to ask Dr. Tallent why we're not getting out senior week this year. Why was this procedure good in the past but not now? It sure is a miserable end to a miserable school year.

Sick cartoon

I'M LOOKING at the April 19 paper, and on the editorial page is a cartoon of Bob Dole talking about Clinton. I think it is a very sick cartoon for anyone to run, much less in your paper. I think you should apologize to Bob Dole and the public for running such an unethical picture.

Permits and welfare

IF BILL Clinton really wants to end welfare as we know it, why not make it just as hard to get welfare benefits as it is to get a building permit?

An eye for an eye

I BELIEVE that the people or person who committed this terrible thing in Oklahoma City, who planted that bomb in that building and killed all those people and terrorized the entire country, when they are caught, the theory of an eye for an eye should apply. I think they should be locked into some room in an old building that we want to get rid of, tell them that a bomb has been planted there but don't tell them what time it's going to go off. At least that will be showing them more mercy than they showed these people. They'll have time to repent.
