I SEE in Saturday's paper where the state highway commission said it couldn't give away the land the cross was on at Kingshighway and Mount Auburn. That's a new one on me. They gave away the old intersection of Route A and 25 at Dutchtown. They gave away the old intersection of 177 and 61 at Fruitland. They gave away Wedekind Park away between Cape and Jackson on 61 and then had to buy it back. They gave away excess right of way between the Holiday Inn and Route K in Cape. If we lose our cross, we've got two groups to thank: the Freedom From Religion Foundation and the state highway department. There's an old saying, "There's something rotten in Denmark."
I'M CALLING to thank the three nice gentlemen from a local construction company here in Cape who stopped and helped my wife when our car was broke down Friday evening at the gas station on Highway 72 in Millersville. It's not very often that three strangers will stop on a Friday evening and start their weekend off by working for an hour to repair somebody's car. These guys have restored my faith in the human race. Thanks a lot, guys.
IN TERMS of Carol Keeler's leaving, the person who called in said they were so glad to see her going because they had enough of this racial unrest in our nice conservative community. Let's be real. Racism is a problem nationwide and worldwide for one reason or the other, whether it's black-white, or Asian-white, whatever. People who think that one person can stir up racial tension are those who close their eyes to it themselves and feel there is no prejudice here in Cape Girardeau at all. I'm African-American and part white, and I tell you it's both ways.
ISN'T ANYONE else getting sick of Peter Kinder's constant haranguing of OBE? It's become his own personal commie scare of the 1990s. To me it looks like McCarthy hunting for reds when there really aren't around. It looks to me as if OBE's aim is to give the kids an alternative form of education which teaches them skills, not just facts. What's so hot about teaching the kids to spout back facts we fill their heads with? What's so hot about competition in schools? When these kids get to the workplace, they're expected to cooperate with fellow workers, not to compete with them.
I WOULD like to make a comment on how President Clinton said that the new Congress needs to raise up and change these welfare programs and make it easier for white women and minorities to get these programs. That's what's been wrong in this country. What about the single white male? He can't even get a welfare check where a single white female can. That's what's wrong. Maybe the so-called angry white males are sick and tired of this, and maybe we'll give them a Republican president.
I WOULD like to thank Bob Fox and Steve Wright for letting the community know exactly what is going on in the school board. I feel like we're starting anew after the election with the new elected officials, and I feel like Kathy Swan has absolutely overstepped her bounds. She should, in all respect for the community and our children in this area, resign. That Pat Ruopp also.
THE CONTRACT With America you might say was what the people wanted because it was a landslide towards the Republican Party. I think they signed the contract, but they didn't read the fine print. I think right now they realize what it entails, and I think they wish they would have thought twice. Incidentally, the Republicans boast they got their bills through. They only made one bill through so far, and that is the line-item veto. The president more than likely will veto most of them. So I think they're celebrating a little too quick.
I LIVE in Jackson, and I'm having a terrible time trying to keep my garden in shape. The cats come in there and dig it up and mess in it, and the dogs run loose. I have called and called about the dogs running loose around here. But it doesn't seem to help matters.
PUNISHMENT AND discipline are important tools for the unmotivated in school. They help students to make adjustments so they can succeed in school and ultimately in life. Even humiliation, when associated with self-induced failures, is part of growing up. It a deterrent to future failures and thus becomes a great motivator. This so-called Outcome Based Education we read so much about today ignores and denies these truths and does so with an unspeakable disservice to experimental student victims. You can tell liberals are in charge of public educational system because they're doing what liberals do whenever they take over an institution: lowering standards. Achievers are being systematically reduced to the lowest common denominator under this coerced uniform mediocrity are held back and taught at the level of the slowest learners. This is a sad commentary on educational system today.
I READ where the Japanese government wants President Clinton to apologize for our dropping the two A-bombs during World War II. That takes a lot of gall from a country that pulled a sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, caused the Bataan death march for prisoners of war, beheaded Chinese prisoners and forced young women into houses of prostitution in Korea. All of this, and they call themselves honorable. Even today we're fighting them on an uneven trade balance allowing them to practically own this country. I would say, no sir, we'll never, ever apologize for shortening World War II with the A-bombs. They saved a lot of American lives.
IN REPLY to the Cape LaCroix cross controversy, I'd like to read a scripture from the New Testament, I Corinthians 1:18: For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God.
MY COMMENT is about the Southeast Missourian's record page. I think that the deaths and births are important and interesting to read, but I find the fire, police and especially divorce sections are unnecessary and are filling up space that could be used for more newsworthy news. Please consider not printing that information and filling the paper with something more important.
I WANT to say that I'm sick and tired of hearing all the hubbub about the commencement at Cape Central last year. I went to a school where everybody participated in commencement, and the people who didn't have enough credits to graduate participated also. But when they came to the podium, they got what was called a certificate of attendance. They were the only ones who knew that they did not graduate. To be honest with you, although I was president of the class, I didn't care who graduated and who didn't. I can't believe people in this town are so petty and cold-hearted.
DO YOU know what would be nice around Cape and Scott City? For a non-smoker like me to be able to walk into a restaurant and eat without inhaling the smoke and coughing my head off. There's supposed to be over 50 percent of the people don't smoke now. It looks like at least one or two restaurants would cater to the non smokers. I'm sure they would have a booming business.
SEN. DOLE made a remark that I found really offensive, and it should be to all Americans. That's why I think he's too old to run. He said we must fight to get back our place in the sun. I was not aware that America had lost its place in the sun, and if it has I'd just like to know who he thinks has got a place in the sun. It was a very ill-advised remark that he made.
SINCE WE have some new school board members now, I'd like to confront them with this question. The administration came up with the idea to distribute parking passes at Central High at $2 a piece to solve the parking problem. Why is it that after purchasing one for my daughter she still has problems getting a parking space in the morning? Did they sell more passes than they have spaces for?
