RACISM IS a two-way street. There are places in Cape Girardeau which I as a white person could go and not be welcomed by the black people. I'm not saying that's right or wrong or makes the white-on-black racism any better, I'm just saying it's equal on both sides. In order for us to get over this and all get together, both sides have to make an effort to get past this.
WEEK AFTER week I read in Speak Out about people wanting to boycott Cape's recycling project. These people whine and complain about the simple task of separating aluminum, metal, glass and newspaper and corrugated from their other trash. They mistakenly think recycling benefits the city council or city government. Wake up, people. Recycling benefits our own children, our grandchildren, relatives and friends. Recycling is patriotic. Recycling is for America.
13-YEAR-OLD courage needs the Jackson superintendent's support. A monitor should be assigned to this girl to report any harassment and follow through with suspension and expelling from school those who harass her. How else are we going to instill in our young a moral sense as well as stopping these drugs so blatantly brought in to our schools? Let's set a good example for our young to be free to disclose and stop drug traffic in our schools. It's time we got our heads out of the sand and stand up to drugs with the courage of this 13-year-old girl. She needs the protection, not the harassment.
I'D LIKE to commend little Lindsay Siebert for speaking out and reporting drugs at the Jackson school. God bless you, Lindsay, and your parents for teaching you right from wrong. There should be more parents like your parents who produce children like you. God bless you.
I CANNOT believe the two-legged pigs in this country who throw rubbish along the side of the road. Aren't these people proud of their lovely countryside? Everyone, please take a garbage bag and pick up this mess in your area. Stop littering, and let's keep America beautiful.
THIS IS to the Oak Ridge School District. I just saw your Wide World Web page on the Show Me Net and I was very impressed. I sure hope some other school districts in the area pick up on this and do the same thing.
THURSDAY I was involved in an automobile accident at the intersection of Mount Auburn and Route K. Two people who saw the wreck stayed with me and explained to the policemen what happened. Don and Laura, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. This goes to show that not all people are afraid to get involved. Again, thank you.
I WOULD like to make a comment about the way the Republicans are handling things. As far as I see, the best one to be elected for president is Steve Forbes for the simple reason there won't be a payback when he gets up in Washington like with Bill Clinton.
I WITNESSED an incident that both angered and saddened me. I work at a business on Kingshighway in Cape. A greenish, teal colored car pulled up to the business next door to us. Inside the car a young woman was driving and a middle-aged woman was a passenger next to her. Sitting on the lap of the older woman was a baby probably nine months old. Being a mother of two small children it broke my heart to see this baby sitting on this woman's lap and not in a car seat. And to make matters worse, they got out of the car, and the baby didn't have a coat or hat on. It was probably 30 degrees outside. When the group left the business, the older woman put the child back on her lap, and off they went. When are people going to realize that our children are precious gifts and they need to loved and protected?
IN RESPONSE to the hillbilly accent of Southeast Missouri, your caller is so well traveled that they are confused, so I shall clarify. The beautiful slang of New York is the result of residents wearing clothes pins on their noses to avoid smelling the sweet stench of the trash piling up on the streets, the decaying bodies of the street gang members. The hip valley girl accent of California is that of the lovely Mexicans who have crossed the borders over the years. As far as the swamp bullfrog accent of Southeast Missouri, it seems we always return to where we fit best. So welcome home.
WHAT WERE those people thinking about when they wanted to establish a prison in the backyard of those living near Klaus Park? Is money all that counts? Big Brother has no money but what comes from us paying taxes so he can't provide jobs. Do we need him? We have a jobless rate of less than four percent in Cape County. Do we need more criminals in our county? Several years ago we voted down a juvenile girls state facility that wanted to be established on the county farm. Let's find ourselves at the ballot box against this one.
I'D LIKE to make a comment about the front-page article about the school bus shooting that killed girl in St. Louis. It has occurred to me that this same possibility could happen in Cape Girardeau. I think maybe some of us ought to call the school system or the school board and find out just exactly what type of identification an individual needs or a student needs in order to get on to a school bus. Near as I can tell, there are no requirements. The school board has considered a program of student identification on a couple of occasions and are now considering another, but it is in jeopardy of not being accepted because of cost factors. Maybe some of us parents ought to call and find out what's being done about identifying students who get onto buses. I know in my own area that students from other areas get on the bus frequently and ride for one reason or another and are not properly identified. So maybe instead of worrying about what the Democrats and the Republicans are doing, which I feel is a healthy situation, they ought to be calling their own local authorities and find out what they're doing about some of the problems that are here in our own town, in our school district.
