I WANT to comment about the resident's speech. I'll have to say one thing: He gave a good speech. He's smooth. They don't call him slick for nothing. So you've got a good picture of how he works. But it's what he said that I don't like. He tried to take credit for the Russian missiles not pointing at the United States. It was Reagan who did that, and the Democrats blame him for standing us in a big hole doing it. Like I said, they don't call him Slick Willie for nothing, and I think you know why. But I think I've seen this performance before and who he reminds me of. Think of it: Elmer Gantry. If this isn't an Elmer Gantry president I don't know who is. He just didn't have a bunch of holy rollers in the back row howling.
I THINK it's a crying shame that people think more of saving puppies' lives than they do of aborted babies' lives. Why doesn't the Missourian put a picture on the front page of aborted babies rather than stupid puppy dogs?
I JUST read the article in the Southeast Missourian by Marc Power concerning term limits. He couldn't be more correct. If people don't like their leaders, they won't vote for them. They don't need to be told they can't. Keep up the good work, Marc.
YOUR JAN. 18 story about the mystery killing of the 1,000-pound bull near Bessville didn't surprise me. About two months ago late one afternoon west of Cape Girardeau and not more than one mile west of I-55, my sister and I spotted a small bobcat. We were standing on the crest of a hill not far from our auto, I might add. It paid no attention to us, just kept meandering through the underbrush. Also, during the summer of 1944, I saw walking at a distance in a cultivated field definitely an animal of the cat family. That one appeared to be larger than the one we saw recently. We all know there are deer around. Other wild animals such as foxes, coyotes and even wolves have been seen in this area. However, it must have been something bigger to have killed that bull.
IN REGARD to Mark Bliss' column Tuesday about how P&G had the FBI track down the guy that supposedly sold those secrets and everything. I wonder how he'd feel if he had a multibillion-dollar organization and have somebody come and steal their secrets.
IN SEN. Dole's reply, did you hear him say, "Yes, we do need a minimum wage raise" and "Yes, there are people without health care. That should be taken care of." You won't. You heard the same Republican rhetoric, and that is the Republicans way.
THIS IS in response to a comment where someone is offended by Jay Eastlick's column saying it should be on the religious page and not in the editorial section. It's funny to me how scary that is to some people when they see religion in print. And I really think Jay Eastlick is not the one you should be afraid of. There's something very scarier than that ahead for you.
I'M A lifelong Democrat. I never vote Republican. But this year I think the Republicans are correct. I think they really ought to cut the budget, even with some of the cuts on welfare and also on Medicare and Medicaid. They're not actually cutting it, they're just cutting the growth of it. And I'd like to see my children and grandchildren have money from the Medicare when they're able to draw it. About the environment: The Democrats are worrying about the environment so much, which I do too, but we can wait until we have a Democratic Congress again and a Democratic president because the world is not going to go away for a year or two.
PRESIDENT CLINTON gave a fine speech, and I know most people thought so. He's a man who knows what he wants to do for the American people and the country and he has proven that against all the interference from the Republican Party. You can't change the old Republicans, but I wish the younger ones would look back and make their own decisions. The young people of today just can't make a home for themselves if they don't have help. And the Republicans don't think the minimum wage should be raised. Ask yourself if this is right. Face the truth. Stand up for Bill Clinton. It's in your best interest.
