THIS IS in reference to Cal Thomas' column Sunday, "Where's Tom Landry?" I have to agree. Players and coaches abuse the referees and are not standard role models. Good column. I think everyone should read it. MRS. CLINTON probably wasn't born a liar, but she had a very good teacher. Maybe her teacher lives in the White House with her...

Role models

Live-in teacher

MRS. CLINTON probably wasn't born a liar, but she had a very good teacher. Maybe her teacher lives in the White House with her.

Where's the suit?

I WOULD like to ask a question of the people who believe that O.J. Simpson is not guilty. On the night that he drove Kato Kaelin to McDonald's, he was wearing a black jump suit. Where is this black jump suit?

A few responses

I'D LIKE to make a comment on three of the callers in Sunday's Speak Out. One said he was going to vote for Forbes in November. You won't have to worry about that. Forbes will never win the GOP primary. Maybe you don't realize that they've got to win a primary before you can vote for them in November. Secondly, a caller talked about Mel Carnahan making promises about no tax increases and then pushing this big Senate Bill 380 which increased taxes. We won't forget it in November. We'll remember. And the one who made the remark about the first lady, that he respected a person by who she is or he is. That's not the point. You respect them because of the character of the people, and she is a natural-born liar. So is her husband. That's all they can do. They lie from one time to the next. Every time they open their mouth, you can't believe anything they say because they contradict themselves two days later.

How many jobs?

SUNDAY NIGHT the vice president said that eight million new jobs were created in the last three years. I would like to know how many jobs have been lost during that period through down sizing, businesses closing or moving.

REPLY: The U.S. Labor Department's estimates of new jobs is a net figure that takes into account lost jobs as well as new ones. However, the new jobs often aren't equivalent to the lost jobs and may be at a lower rate of pay or with fewer benefits.

Let Bosnia pay

WHY SHOULD the American taxpayer have to foot the bill to rebuild Bosnia? These people tore their own country up themselves, and we hear our government is going to put in $600 million to help rebuild that country. It is time for the taxpayers to stand up and let these politicians know that enough is enough. At the present time the federal government is at a shutdown because it cannot reach an agreement to balance the budget. Where is this $600 million going to come from? Are they going to borrow the money like they have been doing all these other years? That's why we have a deficit. It is time that these politicians start taking care of the United States of America and let these people who tore their country up rebuild it themselves.

No chocolate

ABOUT THE Ray Owen's column about the retail wish list: Let's take the chocolate shop that someone said would be good to have in Cape Girardeau. Not only does that person who owns that chocolate shop have to pay for the chocolate, he has to pay for the rent on the retail space, renting at about $15 a square foot in Cape the last time I checked, the utilities and, if he has any, people who work there, let's say 12 hours a day at even minimum wage, another $50 a day. Plus, the Medicare and Social Security on those same people, that's another 7.5 percent of whatever you're paying them. Of course, the owner has to make a little bit of money. Six percent return on his investment, at least, otherwise why shouldn't he just put on a certificate of deposit at a bank. Now you combine that with all the headaches of running a retail store and I have to ask you: Why would anyone open a chocolate shop in Cape Girardeau? How many customers could you have in a day? Wouldn't everybody say they could buy chocolate cheaper somewhere else? There are a lot of hassles to running a retail store, and unless the customer base is already there, I don't think anyone would want to do it. Look how many retail stores have opened and closed in Cape.

Government is needed

WHY IS it that these governors, when there's an oil spill, an earthquake, tornado, call for the federal government to declare a disaster? I thought a lot of them said there's just too much government. So thank God, I guess, we've got the federal government there. It's not so bad after all. Maybe you conservatives might take a little lesson on that, something for you to think about. I'm proud we've got the government, not only on our backs but by our sides.

Dog-bark alarms

I'M CALLING in hoping just maybe people in Red Star district might read this and realize how nerve racking it is to be woke up every morning between 5:30 and 6 a.m. to dogs barking continuously all over the neighborhood.

Held hostage

DO YOU really agree with Clinton, that it's for our good and our children's to keep raising the debt ceilings? Spending more money never balanced anyone's budget. Clinton wants us to believe that he's the Great White Father who is protecting us from the big bad Congress. He's just trying to make sure he gets four more years in the White House. He is not smarter than the combined Congress. It's time he quits holding us hostage.

I AM calling regarding the new stop light out on Route K by Wal-Mart. I just want to say that someone is going to get hurt after you turn off of Route K by Hardee's. They have widened those lanes, and people are using that left-hand turning lane to go straight or to cut off the other person off in the right-hand lane, and someone is definitely going to get hurt. I think they need to do something to remedy this situation.
