Snowfall puzzler

IF IT rains while the sun is shining, we might see a rainbow. If it snows while the sun it shining, do we see a snowbow? Merry Christmas.

Thanks for snow help

I WOULD like to thank the person who cleaned the snow from our sidewalks on the 300 block of North Lorimier. I really do appreciate because no one else could do it for us.

Making decisions

WHY IS it that our City Council cannot reach a decision to ban election signs off the public right-of-way, but they can get rid of smoke detectors from the bedrooms of our children?

It's still murder

I SEE in the Southeast Missourian that a man in Kansas City was charged and convicted of killing an unborn child, but we allow our doctors in this country to do that every day. What's the difference if you open their skull and suck their brains out or you kick the mother's belly? The end result is still the same. How can they allow one and not the other? When will the liberals ever understand that one murder is the same as another murder?

Helpful carrier

I'D JUST like to let you know how fine a job a city carrier named Mike in Jackson is doing. He really helped me out with a problem I had the other day.

Help for the elderly

I'M CALLING regarding the article on the furnace donated to the elderly woman. I would just like to say thumbs up to Flori Sales who donated this. I think it is just absolutely wonderful. It gave me chills when I read this story to know that someone does still care about the elderly in this town. And I would also like to say to the people who are trying to get rich on the Tickle Me Elmo doll that I think it's pitiful that you all are taking advantage of children and selling those toys at a much higher price than what they're sold for in the store.

Thanks for caring

A GREAT big thanks to all who helped with the Parents Night Out at the Main Street Fitness in Jackson. It was a wonderful time for parents to be together and to have their children taken care of in a loving and creative environment. Just wanted to say thank you.

True-blue Republican

I DON'T know what these people are doing griping about somebody voting Democratic all the time. I gave a mother-in-law who voted Republican. She didn't care who was running. She bragged about the fact that she had passed out literature door to door for Warren Harding when she was a little girl. And she said she voted for Richard Nixon every time he ran that she had a chance. We used to kid her, "Grandma, you'd vote for the devil if he ran on the Republican ticket if Jesus Christ ran as a Democrat."

Planning and zoning needed

THANK YOU, county commissioners, for appointing a planning and zoning board. We out here in the county certainly know it is needed. Since it was discontinued four years ago, all kinds of disgusting things are happening to our countryside. If you don't believe, take a drive throughout the county. Mobile homes are being up in just any old way, especially on Highway 177 just east of Fruitland. Car repair shops appear in residential areas, and just plain old junk cars are another problem. May I also say that there reason it was voted down in 1992 was the greed of a couple of developers who spread untruths about the plan. Ask the people who live in their subdivisions about what has happened to them. People who are truly community-minded citizens will welcome this decision.

Panel membership

I'M VERY happy to see that our county planning and zoning panel has been named. However, I feel that R.J. McFinney does have a conflict of interest because he serves on the one for Cape Girardeau. It's quite a shock to me that in the whole township of Cape Girardeau this is the only man who could be found. My question is, are there are women or minorities on this council? It seems like to same old power structure as usual, business as usual, and they're going to force their ideas on us, unless they appoint some women and minorities to this county. It's about time Cape County came into the 1990s because it's almost 2000.

Message to Republicans

I WOULD just like to wish all the good Republicans who have called into Speak Out a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year. And it has been a great year.

Sad voter turnout

THE FACT that the 1996 elections produced the lowest voter turnout in 70 years really saddens me. Oh, by the way, you Democrats, that doesn't say much for Bill Clinton either. My point is, anyone who will not exercise his freedom and use his influence to preserve his freedom while he still has the chance does not deserve that freedom and will surely lose both his freedom and influence. It will be the tragedy of the ages if the American people refuse to get involved and by its silence lets the liberals turn America into a soviet style socialist paradise. If we let them, these liberal humanists will do for America what communism has done for the former Soviet Union. Thank you, Southeast Missourian for Speak Out.

Bottom of the barrel

CREATING THE feminine illusion, huh? It used to be called being a pervert, but things have changed in 1996, I guess. You really scraped the bottom of the barrel this time. Weren't there any worthy news stories that you had to go out and do an article on a female impersonator, or excuse me, the popular phrase today, alternate lifestyle or homosexual? I've kind of lost touch, I'm not sure.

The ax for Newt

SINCE THE Newt Gingrich comedy has now added that he gave false information to the House Ethics Committee, this heavy-duty phony must be axed immediately. No one is safe from his lies.

Troops to Peru?

PEOPLE WHO are in the military today were not drafted, of course. They chose that way of life. However, we don't pay them to live in a bed of roses. We pay them to protect us and to fight for us when necessary. We don't pay them to protect or fight for other countries. I would not be at all surprised, however, if Clinton sent our troops to Peru to protect, police, defend or assist another foreign country while we still pay for it.

Made in China

I'VE BEEN doing my Christmas shopping, and I just wondered how many other people have noticed all the items that are made in China and how serious this situation is getting to be? Used to be that when you picked something up and looked at it, it was either made in Japan or Taiwan. Now almost everything you pick up is made in China, from hairpins to anything imaginable. Why is the U.S. doing business with a communist country to this proportion? This is absolutely ludicrous to be getting all this imported stuff and Americans losing their jobs that used to be making it. These politicians just do not care about the American worker. That's what is has boiled down to, and unless the people wise up and tell these legislators to stop this practice, it will only get worse.

Neighborly parking

THIS IS a comment about parking. I wonder why neighbors bring their cars across the street and park in front of their neighbors' house instead of their own. I wonder if they've never heard the phrase, "Love thy neighbor as thyself"?

Personal delivery

I'M IMPRESSED. The postmaster delivered our express mail package himself today.
