Try sales tax for schools

LET'S HAVE a sales tax for the school. That way everybody pays. I am not for the property owners to pay the whole bill. I'll vote for a sales tax, but never will I vote for a property-tax increase.

Cape Central Band is great

I'D LIKE to make a comment about the Cape Central Band in the SEMO homecoming parade. Despite the weather, I believe that the Cape Central Band was very dedicated, very committed to the task of finishing the parade, much different than some entries. The Cape band has placed quite high in numerous competitions this year in their marching content. The band's exceptional directors are Mr. Ellison, Mr. Nall and Mr. Casey, and they need to be commended for their dedication, hard work and commitment to the program for making Cape Central Band one of the best bands in Southeast Missouri. Cape Central Band is a tremendous band with a bright future, and I know that with good leadership such as our directors are providing that they will begin placing higher and higher in the rankings every time they perform. Keep it up, Cape Central Band and color guard. You are doing great, you are an inspiration to the community.

Disappointing picture

YOU'RE NEWSPAPER has disappointed me again. The picture of wrestlers on the front of the paper was in very poor taste, especially when the caption was added that he was ripping out his opponents' eyes.

Lake would destroy

WE'RE TOLD that we need to recycle to save the world for our kids. How is building the lake going to do that? All it's going to do is kill very old and young trees and take the people's land that's been in their family for generations. All the Indian campsites will be gone, and the wildlife will lose their home. Man destroys the earth every second of the day. Don't you think we need to leave God's creation alone so our children can see his work? Take a drive to the proposed lake site and see what we will be losing.

Paying for the future

GENERATION X is smaller than the Baby Boomers. How can Generation X support the Baby Boomers' Social Security at the current rate of taxation. Everybody ought to understand that Social Security needs a cut just to keep it alive for Generation X.

Pointless letters

I THINK that Dr. Alan Journet should concentrate on being a biology professor at the university instead of writing pointless letters to the editor.

Let the fish breathe

PLEASE, Jackson Parks Department, when it begins to get cold and freezes over the nice little lake in the middle of the park, cut a hole in the water so the fish can come up for air and breathe. Don't make it a repeat of last year where you left it completely frozen, and the poor things died under there. At some point, fish have to come up. People feed them. The fish rely a lot on what people bring to the park. I know this because I've spent a long time buying bread and taking our stale bread out there and dumping it off. They eat like ravenous piranhas. I'm telling you, I don't intend to see one more penny of my tax dollars wasted with you filling it up with newly stocked fish because you made a stupid mistake. Cut a hole in the ice so they can breathe.

A question of right of way

TRAFFIC LAWS Class 101. Yes, I was at the corner of Bloomfield and Minnesota. I came to a stop sign, as well as this white Suburban to my left. I proceeded on, and Mr. Impatient almost hit me. Now according to the law books of Missouri, it's the person to your right who has the right of way. And the worse part about it was, it was during the school letting-off time.

Need four-way stop

I'VE JUST heard on the radio that there's been another wreck at Sprigg and Bertling. I wish the City Council would put a four-way stop there. Are they going to let someone get killed there?
