THE PEOPLE of Cape Girardeau voted an emphatic no on the sports complex being built on North Kingshighway, not once but twice. Now the sign tells us that it is a community center built with convention and visitors tax revenue funds. The most recent reported expenditure is $5 million, it was stated. And, an additional $200,000 of city funds will be spent to run the facility. Perhaps our City Council should be reminded what CVB funds are to be used for, and how the funds are to be allocated. City Council, it isn't your money. It is our money. It has been almost six months since we voted in favor an ethics commission for the city of Cape Girardeau, and also some financial disclosures, as I recall. There has been no evidence of either to this date. It is time to look again at the way we elect our council members, those who are making these decisions in conflict with the will of the citizens of Cape Girardeau. We all should have the opportunity to vote for every council member. My ward representative lives many miles from my neighborhood and doesn't seem to ever have an opinion on any issue. We deserve better representation than we are getting.
IN ONE of the recent issues of the Southeast Missourian in Speak Out someone made the remark about abortion to the effect that Christians had no right to try and impose their Bible beliefs and convictions on others and that the U.S. Constitution was his or her guide. I believe that this person is missing the point. I would like to ask that person where he or she thinks our basic civil laws originated? For example: Why are murder, rape, adultery, stealing, robbery, cheating and perjury against our civil laws? Are not these laws based on the Ten Commandments? This law of God given through Moses is the universal law for all mankind, Christians and non-Christians alike. Isn't the taking of the life of an unborn child murder the same as killing any other human being? Where do people get the idea that the U.S. Constitution permits abortion? That's one thing that certain judges have read into the Constitution. If the founding fathers of our country and framers of the Constitution could see how this precious document is misinterpreted and twisted in so many ways, they would roll over in their graves. Sign me a Christian and an American who would like to see our nation return to the ways of God.
IT SEEMS that since the Republican Convention that the evil anti-American, anti-Biblical, liberal rhetoric has contaminated the airways and other forms of media. It only proves that once the light of truth is turned on, the rats and cockroaches scurry.
CLINTON AND Gore are coming to Cape. Oh, great day. Hey, let's give them what they gave everybody else. Remember Butt Man who traveled around dogging the Republicans? When Clinton-Gore come to Cape, let's have Joint Man come to Cape. No, it'd be Joint Boy, wouldn't it? Mr. Clinton's has an unblemished record of unparalleled increases in drug uses. But wait a minute, you can't blame Bill Clinton for that unless you think Bill Clinton would have taken credit had the teen drug use dropped. Hmm.
WHY DOESN'T the local media have anything to say about all the gays and lesbians at their convention in Chicago endorsing President Clinton and then President Clinton thanking them for their endorsement and going to keep opening up all kinds of gates and avenues to advance their movement? Why do they not talk about this? That just proves what a piece of trash we've got sitting in the oval office. So please folks, wake up and smell the roses. Vote Dole.
THIS MESSAGE is for the person who called in about baby's brains being sucked out. They don't do that all the time, and I wish these people would stop believing it.
SO WHY is Clinton coming to Cape? The reason is simple. It's where Rush Limbaugh came from, and he wants to show he can draw a bigger crowd than Rush can in his own hometown. It's a direct slap in the face to conservative Republican rival.
I AM so happy to hear that our president and vice president will visiting Cape Girardeau. I thought I'd never get a chance to picket and protest them. Good.
