Officials deserve respect

A LETTER in the paper stated Justice Thomas was entitled to respect commanded by the very position he holds. I agree. I also think our president is entitled to respect commanded by the office he holds.

How hot has it been?

TO REALLY appreciate how hot it's been, we should all grab a desk, find an un-air-conditioned building and sit there for four hours doing our multiplication tables and maybe try to list the names of the states and their capitals.

The president's lawyer

ABOUT SOME things I'm a slow learner. I suppose, perhaps, it's because I'm also, even at my age, still gullible. But as you realize, as I did just today, that the attorney general is the president's lawyer, then things seem to fit together a little bit better. I can't believe that. I didn't even realize that until today, and I'm 66 years old.

The beauty of mystery

I WANT to say something to Carl Sagan and the people who believe that the paranormal and the mysterious are distracting from science. Albert Einstein said that "the most beautiful thing we experience in life is the mysterious."

Thanks for police assistance

I JUST wanted to thank the local police department and the university police department. Sometimes we don't realize how valuable these people are to us. I had a flat tire at 9:30 one night, and one of the policeman was kind enough to stop and change that tire for me. A university police came by and directed traffic around so no one got injured. I really appreciated their assistance because I was unable to do the changing of the tire myself. It's nice to know that not only do they protect us from any harm, but they also assist us in times of need.

It's hard to explain

IT'S HARD to comprehend these Republicans who are simply picking on the Clintons for no reason. The fact that the Clinton business partners are headed to prison for fraud and embezzlement of taxpayers' money is no reason for an investigation. Or why investigate the White House travel office? All the Clintons did was fire longtime employees with trumped-up charges so they could give the jobs to Arkansas buddies including Bill's cousin. Why investigate sweet Hillary who holds the distinction of being the smartest woman in the universe without a memory? All she did was handle the paperwork for the crimes that are sending her buddies to prison. And what about these Speak Out callers who bash our president for lying? All he did was promise a middle-class tax cut, welfare reform and to balance the budget in five years. What's wrong with him raising taxes, detouring welfare reform and the balanced budget? Don't these people know that character no longer counts? I'm sure all these Clinton supporters want their children to grow up to be just like Bill and Hillary. Is this a great country or what?

Road work delays rush hour

I WOULD just like to know what the highway department is thinking whenever it gets out on a major two-lane highway before 8 in the morning when business traffic is at it's best and starts paving the highway. I sat in a line of traffic for 15 minutes this morning and was late for work, as well as several other people. I know it's hot out there, and I know they want their job done early, but they're getting paid for that. Those of us getting paid minimum wage or a little above and being late for work are the ones being punished. I don't think this is right, and I'm very upset about it. Let's wait until at least after 8 a.m. when the major business traffic has already finished going to work.

Political bedfellows

WHY DID the Clinton administration see nothing wrong with Farrakan going over and collaborating with Kaddafi and Saddam Hussein? Could it be that Clinton knows that if he does not offend Farrakan or Jesse Jackson that they will deliver Chicago in November? Incidentally I would like to congratulate the 83-year-old caller who said he is withdrawing from the Democratic Party. It surely must be a great relief to get away from that bunch in the White House.

Wait for a new park

I DON'T understand why we need to change the names of any of our established park. If you must name a park after someone, please wait until there's a new park established, because the older parks mean a lot of all of us who have lived here for years and grown up around them and we don't want to change their names. There's no reason for this. It's just ridiculous.
