Can you still get Freon?

I WAS just wondering if you can still get Freon for your car air conditioning, refrigerators or your home air conditioning, or has it all been outlawed in Missouri?

REPLY: Individuals can no longer purchase Freon. Licensed service technicians, however, such as those as auto repair shops, home appliance shops or air conditioning shops, can still get Freon.

Tax cut doesn't add up

I'D LIKE to say one thing about the gasoline tax cut or any other tax the Republican Party dreams up. First of all, I don't like paying taxes any better than my Republican friends, but in a civilized society this is the price we have to pay. When you lower taxes as done in the Reagan years, the deficit exploded from $74 billion in 1980 to $212 billion in 1985. Now can someone tell this old country boy if we can afford another tax cut?

Samaritan from Doniphan

I WANT to thank the man from Doniphan who stopped to help me with car trouble on Interstate 55 only to find out that I was following an ambulance to St. Francis Medical Center with my husband in the ambulance. Thank you so much, and God bless you for taking me to the hospital. My grandson took care of the car, and I don't know how to say thank you enough. I really appreciated your help.

Slow death for some babies

I WISH all you people who think abortion is murder would give it a rest. Have you ever stopped to think about the children who die a slow, agonizing death the day they are born? There are those who are born to drug-addicted mothers and are neglected, beaten, dirty and hungry, Finally one day mom needs a fix, so she gives her child to the drug suppliers to do with as they please. After a while, no one wants the poor child anymore because he is used goods, so the mother does away with the child. Think about it. What choice would you want?

It's time for Ross Perot

IT SEEMS we do not have a good candidate for president. Now is the time for Ross Perot to step in and be a third party. He would really make it this time. We don't really have any choice at this time. Ross Perot, are you listening?

Dogs and murders

I WAS calling about the pet adoption on the front page. I think it's kind of ironic that we have murders and various crimes going on in Cape that are put on pages 5 and 6, but a disgruntled person who wanted a pet and for the best interest of the pet and is told no gets a front page with a photo. I think that is very ironic.

Lights need a program

MY WORST enemy on the face of this earth are those stop lights at Route 74 and West End Boulevard. They know when I'm coming and then they make me sit there for 10 minutes. Can anything be done to program those things like the other stoplights in town?

The season of politics

THE NEWS is that the Whitewater affair is gaining momentum. Well, now from now on until after the election, that's what you're going to hear. I'm looking forward to seeing what Bill Clinton can really do for the people when he doesn't have to argue with Dole and Gingrich and a lot of other Republicans. And as far as character concerning Clinton, what was Dole thinking of when he was campaigning for Ollie North?

Sticking up for Humane Society

I'M CALLING in regards on the article of pet adoptions at the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri. I'm a former employee of the Humane Society. I resent the positive light that Karen York was put in. Animals are not things to be traded and shifted around. They are living beings that deserve to live in one home for their entire lifetime. Yes, animals do have to be euthanized at the shelter, because there are 12 million homeless animals in the United States due to irresponsible owners. So I would like to hold up for the Humane Society. They have a wonderful, hard-working staff. I don't think very many people could work out there and do what they have to do every day, being responsible for animals that no one else in society wants to take the responsibility for.

She did the right thing

I THINK Karen York did the right thing by returning the dog to his owner. Also, I think the Humane Society did the wrong thing by not allowing her to adopt another pet. She's not abusing any animals by making sure they go to a right home. That's no reason to deny her.
