THE HERITAGE Foundation president writing in an column entitled "State of conservatism" has a rather upbeat message. I would like to share two paragraphs with Speak Out readers. "The principles and values of conservatism did not change. They are based on free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values and a strong national defense. These ideas are worth maintaining. I remain optimistic about conservatism because what believe is in doing. I am optimistic because the pendulum of change continues to swing in our direction. I am optimistic because liberalism is a disaster that can no longer be disguised. And I am optimistic because people generally want to get this country back on the right track. The end result will be a more conservative America." To which I add: This tends to be an upbeat thought. I thank him for this column.
THE ENTRY signs into Jackson should say "City of beautiful homes, schools, and churches. The best post office in the state." There is no one like Fred anywhere other than Jackson.
THE RENAISSANCE program at Central High School recognizes and encourages excellence from the students and the staff. I would like to thank the many staff members for their enthusiastic support of such a positive program. Their time spent and hard work is truly commendable.
THANKS TO the group who cleaned the weeds from around the library this past week. It just looks lovely. And thanks to the neighbor who for the first time swept his grass clippings off the street. It makes the whole block look better. Thanks, neighbor.
MY COMMENT this morning is how pleased I am to see the text of Dole's speech in the paper. I have long wished the Missourian would print the text of all important speeches that come out of Washington. I think it would be a help to all of us in many ways. Thank you.
REPLY: Thanks for your comment. We try, from time to time, to publish the texts of noteworthy speeches. We will try to do more in the future, as you suggest.
