THE $40 million projected for education as the gambling proponents suggest means that they project a $250 million take from the citizens of Missouri. Only 20 percent of the profit would be going to education, which means that $240-250 million goes into their own pockets. Do we really want that amount of money leaving Missouri? And what guarantees that the legislators would simply reappropriate that money that would otherwise been covered by the budget to some other area and thereby claim that the $50 million brought in by gambling was supporting something that's already being supported by our own taxes? Do we really want a government based on the taxes from the casino operators, or should we be paying our own way?
THIS IS to all of the people at West Park Mall who eat while they shop and then go into stores and touch merchandise. It's very rude, and it's uncalled for. If you're going to eat pretzels or eat cheese popcorn while you're walking through the mall, please have the sense not to touch merchandise when you go into stores.
I READ Speak Out quite often, and I'd like to comment on some stuff. I see they're talking about Janet Reno. I can sum it up very easily. The Republican Party has jumped into religion. They've tried to get the preachers to come out against the Democratic Party. This corruption went on so long through Reagan, Bush and all of them, and now the Republicans just can't stand it and they will use anything they can. They're like a bunch of hypocrites. Thank you for letting me speak out.
I WOULD just like to say that there are still honest people in our community. I left some auto parts with the receipt in a car wash that someone found. All they had to do was take the parts to the store and return them for the money. Instead they called me because my name was on the receipt, and they brought the parts back to me and would not even take a reward. This was three days after I left them there. I'd just like to say there are still honest people, and I'd like to thank the gentleman who called me.
MR. NOTHDURFT'S letter to the editor April 20 contains a factual error concerning the coverage of the news of Jackie Robinson's breaking of color barrier 50 years ago. Apparently he didn't get to see the wonderful coverage on ESPN, the many specials they had and reran during the entire week of celebration, during which Branch Rickey's name was mentioned over and over again, including in interviews with people who knew him. The whole story was told, and it all came out, all about Branch Rickey and what his motivation was. It wasn't financial, and to even suggest that is ridiculous. How could he possibly make money? People didn't come out to see Jackie Robinson like he was some sort of a clown. Lots of them stayed away.
WOMEN WHO have all of their hair in braids right down to the scalp remind of Medusa. Each one of those braids looks like a snake, and it makes me shiver. There's absolutely nothing attractive about that gal's hairdo.
JUST WHAT we needed: to allow a group of idiots like the Suicide Machine to perform at our Show Me Center. Shame on you all who allow this to happen. The very name of the band is just a reminder of how far this country has been dragged to the pits. God help our ailing America and society.
THIS IS the old vet who fought in two wars. Some of you don't like what I have to say about Clinton. And talk about Truman. He was a good moral man. He wouldn't have stood for homosexuals in the military and women in military with the men. He had character, and he made a big mistake when he fired MacArthur and we lost the war in Korea. So all you people who think Clinton is fine, when this country is gone to the point of return, you'll wake up.
WHENEVER I hear these people arguing for the all the glory of the Confederacy, I like to quote Abraham Lincoln. He said, "Whenever I hear anyone arguing for slavery, I feel a strong impulse to see it tried on him personally." Slavery was only allowed in a few southern state. The Yankees said "Not in my backyard." Everything north of the Ohio River was not slave before it happened. The British empire got rid of slavery completely in 1833. You just wanted to hang onto something that was a time of past.
TO THE person who commented on making everything illegal in a simple-minded way, red meat isn't harmful to your health. Too much of it is. Automobiles do kill people, especially ones driven by people who are drunk. People do drown when they don't follow sensible rules when in the water. It's not busybody to enact laws that save lives. Some people have to be protected from themselves.
