IS IT mere coincidence that the gambling company is leaving town, or is it the hand of the Lord finally led them out of the promised land of Cape Girardeau? Is it mere coincidence that the gambling company has had one stumbling block after another thrown in its path, or is it the hand of the Lord strategically placing all these obstacles in front of it to deny them access to the promised land of Cape Girardeau? Praise the Lord, the gambling company has finally gotten the message. It is folding its tent and leaving town with its caravan of greed and all of the attendant evils associated with gambling. May the gambling company wander in the wilderness forever, seeking but never finding refuge in our fair city of roses, Cape Girardeau, Mo.
WHILE GROWING up, and also later with my own family, we always made snow ice cream. We never, never put eggs in it. Only vanilla, milk, sugar and snow to make it thick. By the way, who hasn't eaten raw cookie and cake dough? I have many times.
I JUST want to comment on the new column by Tamara Zellars Buck. It was a very good column, and I think she has a very good point.
I'D JUST like to say one thing. I'm not a Dennis Rodman fan, I never have been, never will be. But I think we ought to have an Oscar award to the person Dennis Rodman kicked. Unless his groin muscle has moved a lot lower than my has, when you kick somebody about six inches above your knee, that is not your groin. But I guess the man's worth $200,000, so I guess I must be wrong.
IN THE negative times we live in it is always refreshing when someone takes the time to make a difference, no matter how small. Some friends and I came across a small dog lying in the road. It had been hit by a car and was in need of medical attention. We could not find a name tag, and there were no other people around, so we called the police. An officer was sent to aid us. The officer was generally concerned, and he took excellent care of the poor animal until the owner could be located and get the animal. We would just like to express our sincere thanks to the Cape Girardeau Police Department and especially Patrolman Dan Seger, because we think that the police department gets pretty much bad press a lot, and we just want to let you know that there are some good cops on the force.
I THINK a great deal of credit should go to the Salvation Army, United Way, Howard Meagle at KFVS, Southeast Missourian newspaper, Vo-Tech, Civic Center and the new board and all the various individuals who have helped the Civic Center get back on its feet.
WHY WOULD anybody give money to Bill Clinton's campaign fund or to other Democrats campaign funds if that person, the donor, were not going to realize some benefit from it? Would you do it? I don't believe anybody would. We give to the cancer fund because we think we're going to derive some benefit from it.
I'D LIKE to speak to the newspaper, the police department and any other people to say that we live in mobile homes, not trailers. Trailers are something to hook on the back end of a truck. I'm sick and tired of the television and the police department and any other people referring to us living in a trailer. I am proud of my home. I have lived here for 26 years. I have a kitchen, dining room, a big bedroom, two bedrooms, a large living room, a large bathroom. I would not trade my mobile home in for an apartment. I don't have to take my laundry down to the basement and wonder if I have enough quarters. I don't have to fight for a parking spot. I have my own yard, I have my own driveway, I have my flowers, my trees. I live in a home, not a trailer. And I want all of you to sit up and take notice, this is our home, not a trailer.
THE MORE a person pays into or takes from a federal government, the more dependent that person becomes on that government. I never have believed in and never will believe in socialism, but now at my age I'm forced to go along with it because the federal government took my money and told me when to stop working outside the home. However, today I sure can't live on my Social Security check, so where is the security in Social Security? Had there never been such a sneaky way as Social Security for the federal government to get my money, I would have depended upon myself and invested my money myself. So would we all.
I AM against the pay raises for the politicians and judges. But what makes sick is all of these people complaining after they voted to form the commission that makes the decision to give these raises and how much. Some people shouldn't be voting if they don't understand what they're voting for.
I WAS delighted that Cynthia King was honored for her contribution to Notre Dame. May I also give some credit to her mother, Mrs. Lorene King. She is truly an outstanding person. She is always been interested in giving of herself to Cynthia and her siblings. She should be pleased with herself for such an understanding and patient individual. Scott City is proud to have her presence in our town. Each of her children have turned out be exceptional. Not taking anything away from Cynthia, but Mrs. King should be also honored. I'm glad I have the privilege of being acquainted with her and her family.
I AGREE that abortion is selfish. However, Aaron Horrell's letter to the editor would have been much stronger if he had not stooped to partisan politics. Bill Clinton will not do anything to stop abortion. Neither would Bob Dole have done anything to stop abortion. As a matter of fact, didn't abortion become legal during the term of a Republican president?
I JUST wanted to compliment the paper on sports writer Marty Mishow. He really does a great job in reporting the sporting activities of SEMO University, and I just wanted to pass on a compliment to him.
DITTOS TO Aaron Horrell of Chaffee on abortion and selfishness. You hit the nail on the head. I agree totally. I think we need to get our priorities straight here. We wear helmets when we ride our motorcycles and we wear our seat belts when riding or driving in vehicles to save lives, but we allow countless murders and slaughters of unborn babies. That's just what it is. It's not abortion, it's murder, slaughter of the innocent unborn babies.
