WELL, I see that the university is at it again. One of their esteemed professors, Alan Journet, shows his true colors. In his letter to the editor Oct. 28, he makes the statement, "It has often been noted that self-styled Christian right frequently is neither." I may not agree with Cal Thomas on many things that he says, but this anti-Christian bias by college professors is unacceptable. Mr. Journet shows himself to be one of what, unfortunately, academics are in this day and age: educated fools.
I WAS saddened to read in Speak Out that if you're a Democrat you can't be a Christian based on Clinton's stand on abortion. Does this mean Republicans who died during the Nixon Administration went to hell because of his part in signing into law legalization of abortion in the first place?
TO ALL those concerned, in reference to Click and Double Click column in Tuesday's newspaper, I want to make mention of the inadvertent blotch that these two columnists made. As the article began, "Let's begin at the web site of the growing city of Jackson," and they begin in a description of Jackson's web site, but no where is to be found is the address of the Jackson web site. How is anyone able to go to the Jackson web site that is so plainly described when no web site address is given? Was this purposely left out so that it wouldn't hurt the over-publicized semissourian.com web site, filling every available inch of the newspaper with their stupid ad? Sometimes, as a reader, I am really dismayed by the lack of professionalism of the Southeast Missourian. I'm left to wonder if the staff, especially the columnists in this article described, proofread their articles for careless mistakes such as this one. And to be a resource to the readers that was lacking from the columnists of this article, the web address to the Jackson web site is http://www.jacksonmo.com.
REPLY: The web address for the Jackson web site was inadvertently omitted. Thanks for pointing this out. The web addresses for the other local web sites were included in the column.
LATELY SOMETHING has cleared up as to why the Red Chinese would give money to the Clinton administration. Now it becomes obvious with this Chinese dictator coming over here. They want nuclear power. That's what they want. They want us to give them nuclear technology. And they have been on the forbidden list because they converting it to atomic bombs. But now they have their own president in the White House who is saying that he's going to certify them so they can get nuclear power plants. So you see why they gave the money. Now it's going to be our grandkids who are going to pay for it. Because they'll send this stuff back at us maybe one of these days. They're sure getting their money. These people have spent their money well. A few million dollars, you buy the president of the United States. Those Chinese are not little Christian soldiers at Waco singing "Jesus Loves Me." You won't put the fire on them the way that they did at Waco. I just think that this is a shame that we've got a president like this, and I'm certainly glad I'm not responsible for it because I didn't vote for it.
ONE SOLUTION to move traffic around the square in Jackson is to put stop lights at the intersection of Main and U.S. 61. These have been needed for years. Another help would be to route U.S. 61 around Jackson like Perryville did its highway.
I READ in the paper where the city of Jackson is growing so big and so fast. How come the city personnel isn't growing? The police department is still small, the fire department is still small. They need to think about that also.
THIS IS for the person who called in frustrated by the people running the red lights. I feel the same way. I get tired of looking both ways before I go through my green light. The other day it happened, and I wrote the license plate number on my hand and noted the time and where it happened. When I got home, I contacted the police. They took my information and asked me if I would go to court as a witness, and I said yes. I know a lot of people don't have time to go to court, but if you do as I do and contact the police, maybe that will stop them from running red lights. So remember, you lawbreakers, I have my pen handy.
I WAS at the Jackson-Cape football game. I noticed the announcer would hardly say anything if a Jackson player scored. Once after they scored, there was about three minutes of silence. He didn't announce they had scored or who had scored. We people in the stands thought that was unfair to those trying to keep up with the game.
I NOTICED in the high school football game in Houck Stadium, one of the speakers blanked out several times and it finally quit working. Please fix it.
I AGREE with President Clinton. Our children should be good readers. My son has always had a problem reading, and it's followed him all through school and now in college. He's had problems with reading math questions, history, English, science, literature or any class he has read in. An inadequate reader will always have a problem. Please catch it and help them while they're young.
I READ the article on area cemeteries with great interest. A lot of the old cemeteries have been neglected terribly. It did not see Shady Grove Cemetery listed and wondered if it could be one of the names unknown. Shady Grove is a large, all black cemetery located about five or six miles west of Cape off Highway 74. The road that leads up to it goes up by where the old Pecan Grove School was located. There are several nice homes now located around it in those roaming hills. I would like to see it listed since my father dug graves there and a lot of my ancestors are buried there.
I READ with interest the editorial called "New cable accord looks like a good plan." I think it's ridiculous. I want WGN back, and I want it back now, Any plan, I don't care how good it looks, is not good unless you get WGN back.
LOUISE WOODWARD should pay for her crime in England. As far as I'm concerned, shaking an infant, no matter what the reason is, you should not do that, because it can have psychological effects on the child, either when they're young or when they get older about touching them, fearing that they will shake them too. Shaking a child is no way to discipline or to put punishment on a infant, especially that baby. That is no way to raise a child. Granted, the woman was just a baby sitter, but she should have had more common sense than to do something like that, ever.
CONGRATULATIONS TO the Central High School band. Their winning marching season is a testament to their hard work and commitment. This fan, however, missed their winning ways at the Cape-Jackson football game last week. Remember the band never loses the halftime. Perhaps their presence at the game would have sparked some pride into the Cape side of the field and offered support to football team effort. It certainly would have offered a sense of community which could be felt from across the field. I really don't care that they didn't march because of the field condition, but familiar school songs from the stands would have generated some enthusiasm for our boys, especially during the third quarter. Again, hooray for the band, but how about hooray for our football team and hooray for our school too?
MANDELA PRESENTS Gadhafi with South Africa's highest award. Algerian opposition joins in new election protests; 13 die. Oh, boy, where does it end? Although I am vehemently opposed to colonial rule anywhere, especially in Africa, the tragic comedy which is self rule in the African continent continues with very few exceptions. The list of self-rule leaderships, actually dictatorships, that have governed -- and I use that term loosely -- the nations of Africa the last 30 years is a Who's Who of Madam Toussaud's house of horrors. I do not condone what happened under colonial rule, but what has and continues to happen in these nations only reaffirms my feelings of race relations on a domestic front here at home. What took place in America over 250 years, namely slavery and segregation, is and continues and will always be a tragic mark on our history and a dark cloud over the history of the Caucasian race. However -- and here if some feel good calling me a racist, fine, I know that I am not -- if black Africans and for that matter black Americans wish to see their No. 1 oppressor, they need only look in the mirror. I think I need no further explanation is needed, for everyone knows the real causes of the issues of which I speak.
I READ in the paper where this person is spreading AIDS so bad in New York and this lady lost her son in 1995 from AIDS and when she goes to lecture in these schools, they don't want her to mention about protection. I think this is sticking their heads in the sand. Just like she said, they need to get their heads out of the sand. This guy went around and spread AIDS to I don't know how many people. They're going to spread it to someone else, and if the young people aren't educated, they could really get it.
RON WELCH'S long letter to the paper was absolutely necessary to show the discrimination of the sole taxi service in Cape. As a Navy veteran who luckily survived WWII without a disability then but who has one now, I'm told "to drop dead" if I cannot meet the stringent self-imposed rules the only taxi company in Cape wants to meet. We desperately need another taxi company here in Cape. The rule makers of Cape should listen closely and energetically to make this taxi company do what it is supposed to do. People with disabilities need and require whatever is necessary to live decent lives. This may necessitate getting a new or other taxi companies to take honest and reasonable care of all taxpaying citizens of Cape. Ron Welch is all too right.
