Treatment of freed slaves

CHARLES STIVER took exception with a claim made by syndicated columnist Donald Kaul. Stiver stipulated some one-time slave owners treated newly freed slaves well. Gee, Mr. Stiver, that's really comforting and condescending and disgusting.

Just stop the fighting

ONE OF the most hypocritical things I have ever heard is don't kill them on Sunday because that's a holy day. Let's wait until Monday to kill them. Let's not strike tonight because Friday is a holy day for them. That's the same thing as let's declare a truce because it's Christmas Eve. But it just so happens that Christmas is the time we observe Jesus Christ's birthday. It's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard that you can stop fighting for one hour or one night. You can stop fighting altogether.

Disrespect for the president

TO THE person who called our president a pervert and a lot of unkind names: That was strictly uncalled for. Whether this person be a Democrat or Republican, Newt Gingrich resigned because his party does not want him there as the speaker of the House. So the president of the United States admitted he did wrong. He asked for forgiveness. We shouldn't be the ones to forgive him. It should be his family and his God. And this person sure lacks the proper upbringing to not only have disrespect for the president, but the office of the president of the United States by calling him a pervert. I think we've got something lacking. If that is the attitude of the conservative Republicans, thank God I'm not a conservative Republican. I think the liberal Democrats show more Christian character than these Republicans have shown in all their days.

We allow murder of babies

CONCERNING CRUELTY to animals: I don't know why we get so upset when we see animals mistreated when we permit abortion, the murder of our unborn babies, every moment of every day. God help us.

Too much debt for a tax cut

I HAVE some trouble understanding your reasoning in an editorial calling for tax cuts from the recent budget surplus. With a $5.5 trillion debt, how can you justify another tax cut when we are spending $1 out of $7 that we are taking in just to pay the interest on our debt? As President Bush stated, that is voodoo economics. It is true, most Americans work several months a year to pay taxes, but not just federal taxes. This includes a lot of other taxes that your paper has supported in the past, including the tax to buy the seminary property which wouldn't benefit the working man at all. As Jo Ann Emerson told me -- and the reason I voted for her -- her position is to pay back Social Security first, thereby reducing our debt which in turn would be the best tax cut for everyone.

Give priority to parking

THE NEXT time the Show Me Center has a big crowd, people will probably have to car pool. Instead of making more parking space, they've cleared part of the north side. Parking has never been a priority at SEMO. Look at all the cars parked on the streets. At one time they talked of building a parking garage. What happened? Maybe parking should be the focus instead of the River Campus.

Have a big heart

I'M CALLING Speak Out to say that everybody ought to have a big heart and help with the situation in Nicaragua instead of complaining about our government.

Pull up you trunks, guys

I WISH Coach Garner would make the basketball players pull those sloppy trunks up where they belong.

Do something about crime

SOMETHING NEEDS to be done about all the crime and violence that has been occurring in the Westfield apartment area. I have lived in that area for over six years. It has gone from a very pleasant area to one where you have to be in your home before dark. We have had many assaults, robberies, drug and gang activity, cars speeding up and down the Boxwood Drive area and a 15-year-old brandishing a gun in his front yard at noon. I feel the City Council, police department and the neighborhood need to get together to come up with some ideas, possibly starting a neighborhood crime watch and some ideas to get rid of the unwanted in the area and to get our neighborhood back.

And now you know

JOE SULLIVAN wanted to know what a woolly bear grew into. The mature woolly bear is an Isabella tiger moth.

Future punishment

I HAVE been reading continuous output on Speak Out about forgiving Clinton. Let me add a little bit to this. I've done some research and found out that there are things that are being misquoted. You can forgive him, but he's still going to be punished. I don't believe in forgiving Clinton. He sinned, he publicly acknowledged he sinned, and you can forgive, but God hasn't forgiven. He's still going to be punished. Let's get him out of office. That's the punishment he needs.

Premiums are inequitable

I WOULD just like to say that through my job, I have insurance with some major insurance companies. They also have insurance on people who work for the same company I do in St. Louis. The people in St. Louis can get a PPO plan and pay a $5 copayment for going to the doctor or the hospital or anywhere else. In Cape we don't have any PPOs, yet we both pay the same premium. I would like to say I am tired of subsidizing the PPO plan for all those people in St. Louis. I don't think we should have to pay the same premium. I think ours should stay the same and theirs should get a whole lot higher, or else ours should go down because we don't have any PPO available and we have more out-of-pocket expenses.

No children in column

GUESS WHAT? Mark Bliss wrote a column without mentioning his children. That's a first, I think, and I really don't mind people bringing up their children because that's what we do best, our children and our grandchildren. However, it seems that so many television commercials and newspaper columns have to bring their children into the picture. Thanks, Mark, I enjoyed your column.

Ashamed of name calling

NEVER HAVE I seen the Southeast Missourian allow so much garbage and so slander and so much evil talk in Speak Out. This person who called in about the pervert in the White House -- that is evil and uncalled for and disrespectful. And the Southeast Missourian should publicly apologize for getting it in and apologize to the president and his family. And another thing I've got to say, if they would call against the Republican officials and make derogatory remarks against Jo Ann Emerson or against Kit Bond or against John Ashcroft like that, they would not print it in the column. I think the Southeast Missourian shows so much bias, strictly Republican party. I don't know what the problem is, but if that wasn't the only thing we have in town to put ads in, I would keep it completely out of my house. I think the Southeast Missourian should be ashamed of itself. The Southeast Missourian is strictly a lot garbage and a lot of slander to allow this person call our president a pervert, regardless of what the president is or what party. I really don't want your paper in my house.

Paying for Medicare

I'D LIKE to respond to the caller who was complaining about so many payments for the elderly. She probably doesn't realize that we are paying high premiums for Medicare coverage. These premiums are taken out of Social Security check. It is not a handout, but we are paying for insurance.

Arrogance and abrasiveness

I AM encouraged to see the Missourian editors suggest the GOP needs new faces. No, I am not a Democrat, and I did vote for Senator Dole. For too long the Republican party has come across as the party of negativism. It must be a carryover from 40 years of not being the majority. When it did get to the majority, how did we handle it? We handled it with arrogance and abrasiveness. I agree with Rush Limbaugh, Newt Gingrich, Dick Armey, and Trent Lott on several issues. However, the Limbaugh, Gingrich, Armey and Lott approach of "your un-American and stupid to disagree with me" is exactly why the two parties are so insufficient in working together for all of America. As an example, I deplore homosexuality. To say Democrats are perverts because they argue, under American laws, homosexuals do have certain rights as citizens, is thin too because we know it's a lie. Our last Congress, if you'll check, had a very poor record in regard to today's work. They counted completely on Clinton's weakness and scandal to get votes rather than their own work, ideas and problem solving. And, yes, Republicans were against Social Security and Medicare when it started. Check your history. The people want the issues answered, not detailed smut scandal.
