NO ONE, and I do mean, no one, should give Gary Rust grief because he mentioned that he'd seen a documentary movie about Ayn Rand and deemed it fascinating. Neither should he be given any trouble because he suggested you "wrap yourself in the unique beliefs, life and philosophy of this fascinating woman." This in no way means Mr. Rust endorsed her philosophy known as objectivism. At least I hope he didn't. Ayn Rand was such a right-wing extremist that she was denounced over and over by the godfather of conservatism. That woman's philosophy makes Libertarianism look like welfare-state liberalism.
BECAUSE THE Libertarian Party stands for freedom in its purest form, I respect the free choice of a local Libertarian candidate who withdrew from the contest for state representative. However, I want the candidate to know that I am crushed and disillusioned. In fact, I'm considering abandoning my Libertarian beliefs. Maybe what Janis Joplin sang is true after all: "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose."
DELIVER ME from small towns. I don't mean population, I mean character.
NO. 1 reason to live in Cape Girardeau against all obstacles. I stepped outside this evening for a breath of air. Felt something licking at my feet. I knew my dog was inside. I looked down and it was a raccoon. It was a whole family. The whole family just went around the corner of the house. It really makes Cape wonderful.
JO ANN Emerson needs to be careful how she debates Heckemeyer. Heckemeyer is such a delight to talk to. He is a wonderful storyteller. He can start telling stories, and you can envision the characters in front of you. You can picture the entire painting he's trying to make in front of your eyes. You can see people moving and talking. He's just wonderful at telling stories. But in the end we have to remember that the person we want representing us in Congress is not a storyteller. We want somebody who can lower taxes, balance the budget and fight to give everybody the encouragement to be the best that they can be. I think that person is Jo Ann Emerson.
WITH RESPONSE to the article about mowers putting clippings in the streets and wondering about the city doing something about. I doubt seriously if they will, because they make as big a mess as anybody. I see them mowing some of the medians, and the mess they make is a disgrace.
THIS IS in reference to the city officials of Cape Girardeau. If they keep on taxing people like this motel-hotel tax that is being sought by the university, first thing you know people are going to be shunning Cape Girardeau. I think this is ridiculous that some of these taxes are going to be put on some of these out-of-town people and the Southeast Missouri area is having to pay for things going on in Cape. I just thing this tax thing needs to be curbed. It's getting out of hand.
I WANT to point out that there's something fishy about these polls. They claim 80 percent of the people approve of Clinton and want him to stay as president. But I saw on television the other night, the head of the Democratic Party in California is saying that, according to Democratic polls, 35 percent of the people of the country hate Clinton's guts and are white hot with anger and plan on voting. They're concerned about it because only 20 percent of the people have been voting, and if you get 35 percent of the entire population voting, that may make up more than the 20 percent. So I don't see how if 35 percent of the people are going to vote against Clinton and hate his guts that they would be in favor of him staying in. If those polls are correct, it couldn't be more than 60 percent approval. But I don't believe it's that. I believe they're asking in certain places like inner cities and Washington, and they're coming up with these good polls. I've never met all that many people who think Clinton is such a great guy. Most of the people I know plan on voting against him, and that's just not in this area either. I think it just shows the hypocrisy of the news media and how they make all this stuff up. That's what they did with these polls.
I THINK Speak Out epitomizes the ancient Greek concept of a public forum, the marketplace for the exchange of ideas, if you will. Beyond that, I believe an analysis of the substance of Speak Out commentary serves as conclusive proof that, as a system of government, democracy is doomed.
IF THE university spent as much time and effort to solve the problem with parking on campus as they do to try to get money from the public in taxes, then the parking solution would be solved in about 2 1/2 hours. Maybe they should just do away with all assigned parking and let first come, first served, including staff. That would solve a lot of their problems that they have with parking.
I'D LIKE to add my request to the mowers not shoot their clippings into the street. I moved here 15 years ago from a very lovely area. I'm very proud to say I'm German, and we were taught never to do that and always clean up after ourselves. My question to the people who do it: Do you actually think that the clippings in the street look better than being on your lawn uncut? I don't, so please stop doing it and have consideration.
I'M GLAD to see the picture in the Missourian Speak Out of the Marquette Hotel and the weeds. The weeds are not the only problem. The place is a death trap for children who've been caught playing in there. There's broken glass, jagged metal, all kinds of places where children who live in the neighborhood can get hurt. It's time for the owner of the Marquette Hotel to put his money where his mouth is. Quit running for Congress, go home and clean up his own back yard.
I WOULD like to thank three nice young men who helped me the other day. When I was parked in the bank parking lot, my car started to roll, and I couldn't get to it to stop it. They jumped out of their car and stopped my car. I'm so grateful to them. They just went on, I didn't get a chance to thank them. I'm so thankful for what they did.
I LIVE on Main Street. My dog got hit, and I just wanted to say thank you to my neighbor and also to the lady who turned around and came to my house to make sure my dog was OK and even to the people in the car that hit the dog, because they usually don't stop. But they stopped and made sure that the dog was OK and waited until we got down there to him. Also, I'd like to say that my dog is doing fine in case anyone was wondering.
