I AM really worried about Gary Rust. In a recent column, he praised both the movie "Bulworth" and U.S. Sen. John Ashcroft. Next thing you know, he'll be paying tribute to Dr. Laura Schlesinger while suggesting Dennis Rodman as a societal role model.
I WANT to say that I agree totally with the caller who commented, probably a month ago, about the reason teens are shooting people, and it's the media. That is why it is happening. I know that kids need to be disciplined by their family and everything. I understand that. But ever since this happened, it is on the news every day. I'm watching the news now and it's on. In the morning it will be on. On the noon news it will be on. It's on the news all the time. That is why they get to see themselves. Kids think it's something to be on the news. Like the one kid in jail, he said he was a celebrity in there. And they publicized that. If they would shut up and quit publicizing it and prosecute these people, it would quit happening.
THE SOUTHEAST Missourian is wrong. A presidential primary is a terrible idea. We had better presidents when the nominees were picked in smoke-filled back rooms. In continuing to pander to the people by supporting initiative, referendums and presidential primaries, the Southeast Missourian becomes more and more identified with the populist right instead of legitimate conservatism.
CAPE GIRARDEAU is a very prosperous and lucky town. It is a shopping hub for the entire region. People come from all the surrounding towns and outlying areas to buy things. Because of that, Cape Girardeau receives a lot of sales tax money. That tax money should make it possible to reduce taxes for the citizens. Why does Cape Girardeau keep raising fees like trash collection and water supply? In Cape Girardeau's lucky prosperity with all this sales tax, we should be able to lower our taxes for our citizens. Let's try to lower our taxes.
THIS IS just a group of words of praise for the column on poison ivy in Wednesday's paper. Dr. Paul Schnare has written a very comprehensive article, and after years of looking up information about poison ivy, I have finally found a way of identifying the noxious weed thanks to Paul.
RECREATIONAL BASEBALL in Jackson is anything but recreational. If you, as the coaches, decide that it is major league baseball, only a choice eight players get to play with the other position being rotated by the remaining four or five players. Every parent pays the same money for their sons to play baseball, not to sit in the dugout time and time again. If these teams were based on ability, how many that are playing every day would be on the bench? Most coach's sons play every inning. Are they exceptional baseball players? If tryouts were held, would these boys make the team? Recreational baseball should give every boy the same playing time. It is, after all, recreation.
