IN RESPONSE to the "Violence is all around us" comment, the caller is only correct on one issue. We do indeed need parental responsibility. But the parental responsibility we need is that parents have to take an active part in raising their children from birth to adulthood, instilling in those children good family, humane values. Call them Christian if you want or anything else, but values and a family life are what children need. Having come from a broken home where values weren't always taught, I know this to be true. Gun control would not have stopped any of those children from grabbing guns. If you look at the cases of those children you see there was no parental control over those children, there were no values taught to those children. One may have attended church, but apparently they didn't learn anything there because it wasn't taught to them properly. We do need parental control. We do need parental responsibility of our children, and we need for the government to get out of our lives. We don't need armed camps for school. That's not an environment in which to educate our children.
WHERE WILL we get the money and how long will it take us to pay for all the promises President Clinton is making on this trip? And who pays and how much does this trip cost?
THIS IS in regard to the editorial about keeping the Indian mascots for the SEMO teams. Just wanted to let you know, first of all, Indians do not wear costumes. The proper term is regalia. And the other thing is if they're going to have them dressed in regalia and they're going to have a Indian mascot, there are plenty of American Indians in this area like myself they can use to be these mascots. Then you'll have an actual native person doing it, and it's not going to be as offensive.
I JUST want to encourage everybody to vote yes on all fee increases in the city that will be on the ballot this coming Tuesday. It's very important that the city get the revenue from these in order that the people who benefit from the services provided are the ones that should pay for it. If we don't increase the fees for these services that the city provides, the taxpayers as a whole will be paying the brunt of the bill to support these activities that are utilized by a small number of people. Vote yes on all of these and allow the people who benefit the most to pay for the services that they are receiving.
I JUST want to say that I thought it was pretty nice of the lady who picked up the blind man and his wet dog on Broadway. I just wanted to say thank you for that.
WE HAVE taken God out of the schools and prayer out of the schools. Now we're paying a terrible price.
THIS A comment for Gary Rust's column on priority mail. We recently had an experience that our daughter from Mississippi sent us a packet of pictures priority mail. She mailed them on Thursday morning of one week, paid $3 for a small packet, and we received the following Tuesday. I don't consider that priority mail.
WHY ARE most people not having a peaceful and abundant life right now? Why do things such as the school shootings in Jonesboro happen? The answer: sin. Romans 3:23 says, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." We as humans choose to disobey God and go our own willful way. We still make this choice today. This choice results in separation from God. Not guns, not parents, not taxation, not liberalism, not even the media is at fault. The fault lies within every one of us. There's only one remedy for this separation: the cross of Christ.
IN YOUR recent Speak Out there were comments by two teen-agers condoning Bill Clinton's behavior. I'd like to speak to their parents. Shame on you for not teaching your children that character and moral values are the backbone of a free civilized society. The crime and violence so prevalent in our country today are a sure sign of moral decay, and today that starts at the top.
FOR OVER a year, the neighbors on Butler and Henderson have been harassed by dopers targeting our widows, handicapped and elderly. They trespass nightly from dawn to dark. They've stolen everything not nailed down. There are two groups of them. They work separately. Can't someone do something about this?
I'M LAUGHING so hard at the feminists on this issue of Clinton scandals. They have done such a quick turnaround that if they had any brains, they'd be dripping out of their ears. There was a time when feminists worked very hard and did convey the message in the court of opinion that a man was considered a sexual harasser if he had a pinup calendar in his office, or socially if a man touched a woman without asking her permission. Now because of their affinity to forgive their president for anything, we are hearing them say that it's OK that he dropped his pants, because he took no for an answer. I think that is the most absurd thing I have ever heard in my life. Now we have come to it's OK for a man to sexually harass you if he does not give any repercussions to your life if you say no, according to the feminists. We've come around 50 years now. It's about time that we get back to the matter of a woman slapping a man's face for doing gross things and then let the matter be dropped. If it continues, then criminal actions would take place as a true assault.
I JUST wanted to say that I really appreciated Carol Poole's letter to the editor. I thought it made a lot of sense, especially the part about us being overtaxed and why both parties have to work. A lot of times mothers get blamed because they have to work. I don't think any woman with several children in her right mind would want to go and work for the fun of it when it just creates a lot more work for her at home. And a lot of other things she said make sense, and I appreciate very much her clarity. Maybe she should run for office.
TWO WEEKS ago, Jerry Falwell appeared on TV and stated that this country was being running by anti-Christ leaders. I disagree with him. Take Kenneth Starr for example. He is a minister's son and a very good friend to the Rev. Pat Robertson. So how does Falwell come to the conclusion that our leaders are anti-Christ?
IN THE Paula Jones case, the judge did not say that Bill Clinton didn't do it. She said it wasn't outrageous enough to be considered a criminal act. I wonder if it was Chelsea Clinton and she was called to someone's room and the man exposed himself if that would be considered outrageous enough? The man would be in jail. His name and life would be ruined.
THE PEOPLE of the United States should take Paula Jones to court for wasting so much of the president's time. That's our time she wasted.
I WANT to comment about the sex scandals of the president and people who are saying that it doesn't make any difference. This reminds me of what President Lincoln said, "People usually get the kind of government that they deserve."
