TO THE caller who was praising the Republican Congress, please give us a little credit. We, of course, know that Congress approves and balances the budget, but it's the president who submits the budget and, therefore, sets the nation's agenda, priorities and trends. Why are you praising a Republican Congress? Remember the deficit during the Reagan and Bush administrations, please. It's you who need a history lesson. So while you thank God for your Republicans in Congress, most of us thank God for Bill Clinton.
IT'S INTERESTING that the newspaper editorial Wednesday was so quick to point the finger at the city in the recent handling of the CVB when the newspaper did the shabbiest reporting job I've ever read in allowing a disgruntled employee to vent on the front page.
I NOTICED that California is going to have a vote on whether English will be the No. 1 language and in Arizona the Supreme Court has thrown out a voter-approved referendum making English the main language. At the meetings of the Americas, a treaty was signed. It is designed to move us toward one-hemisphere government, kind of like the European common market. Believe me, when we go into that, English won't be the primary language in this hemisphere. After all, we're a minority here. It will be Spanish, and we'll be using one money. This is the whole idea. And finally after we go along with one language-one money, you watch, it won't be long before we're go into some union with Europe, and we'll be one world. The whole world will use one kind of money. It will be simpler for one thing. Look at the TV programs. What are they going to do, have them all in different languages? No, it will be better for us to speak one language, and if Bill Clinton and Al Gore get their one-world dream, it will be Spanish.
I AM 23-year-old semi-professional with two college degrees. In January, I moved 1,100 miles to Cape Girardeau to start living without the financial crutch of my family. I have a 60-hour-a-week professional job, and my middle-class background demands very little in the way of luxury. Despite this, I have barely been able to make ends meet from month to month. I drew tremendous personal offense at the implication by a recent caller that this makes me a human cockroach because I acquired an acceptable table-and-shelf unit deposited on the curb during spring cleanup week. I'd love to be able to afford new and expensive furniture. I'd be thrilled to have second-hand furniture if I could make room in my budget for even that. I'm making do and trying to make my home a little more functional. If you have a problem with this sort of thing and generosity given by people who are getting rid of old furniture and such during this week, maybe you could buy me a new computer desk yourself so I can do some work at home without having to lie on my belly on my floor in order to be able to stare at my monitor, which also sits on the floor.
THIS IS to all people who would gossip about, spurn and especially judge their neighbor. Before you act so saintly and think yourself better, please read all of Matthew 7 in your Bible, especially verses 1 and 2. Then take a good look at yourself again.
I HAVE been reading the comments in Speak Out about people picking up items that others don't want or need. I think it's great if someone can use castoff items that others don't need rather than to have them fill up the limited landfill space.
IN RESPONSE to the person who called the people who pick up junk from spring cleanup human cockroaches: I'd just like to say I'm sorry you feel that way about it. My husband and I both work full-time jobs, but we do like to find things we can use and are thankful to get them. Also I know some people who picked up things that were given to others through Christian service projects. I think it is wonderful if someone else can use what others no longer need.
I'M CALLING to say thank goodness for state Sen. Peter Kinder. Finally we have a Republican legislator who is not afraid to respond to the attacks by Democrats. I only wish our U.S. legislators had the same courage. And I agree that Rep. Heckemeyer is not very knowledgeable. He's a very nice person, but he needs to do some more homework.
I'M CALLING in to respond to the person who called about the human cockroaches during spring cleaning. What ever happened to using what you need? And this person is probably one of the first people who would climb onto the recycling bandwagon. Isn't this just recycling?
THIS IS from a human cockroach. If your trash means so much to you, why don't you keep it? If you resent anyone who needs what you throw away, just keep it.
THE FOOD & Garden section of Wednesday's paper was great. The articles by Mr. Food and Mr. Harte were excellent, because I sure love cheese. Articles like this -- they're what the Missourian should be devoting its time and energies to. You are to be congratulated.
I ENJOY reading your paper and also enjoy watching TV, but I would like for you and everyone else to know that I'm a 76-year-old lady who joined a group that didn't watch TV from last Wednesday to this Wednesday. I think everybody should try that. You have a special feeling and time to do things that you wouldn't do with your TV on.
I'M READING about the young emergency-room doctor who says there's no Lyme disease in Southeast Missouri. As a member of my family said, do ticks need a visa to get into this area? It is disheartening to know that the emergency-room doctor has such an archaic idea. Many people in this area have been infected and many more have been undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. There is even a Lyme support group that meets at one of our local hospitals. One would hope that the hospital where this young doctor works will either educate him or terminate his services. It's sad to say the medical professional as a whole is blind to this disease. There is very little help for those who diagnosis comes late. In the meantime, many are suffering, and many more will.
I CAN'T tell you how happy I was to open the Sports section and not see Mark McGwire's big old mug looming out me with some breathless, half-witted story by the AP about how wonderful he is. I was getting so sick of that. Delino DeShields has done more for this team right now than just about anyone else you name, and he wasn't getting the credit as far as I could see. And even McGwire will tell you it's a team effort. He doesn't like all this focused attention just on him because he's smart enough to know that one of these days, even though the Cardinals are a great bunch of guys and they all get along as far as we know, it's going to create some ruffled egos, and it wouldn't be good for camaraderie.
