I WONDER where all these teen-agers get money to buy cigarettes. They surely don't work that much and get paid, because they're too young to even work.
I READ in the Missourian about the proposed noise law. You know, I can understand stopping people with these big stereos and their cars that rattle your windows, but who's going to be driving a motorboat down the street? And I don't agree with the deal where you can't run an automobile between 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. That is not right, either because you just can't tell people they can't get in their car and drive off. That's not right. Also, as police officers could initiate their own complaints, but they're going to abuse that law because all the stereo equipment that they confiscate will go to the police auction they have annually every year. I say give them fines. That would be my advice. I think all the voters out here ought to stand up to the city of Cape Girardeau and say we're tired of all these ordinances, and we shouldn't have to tolerate it.
IN THE Southeast Missourian there's an article about a proposed law requiring motorists to stop for a funeral procession. In Jackson, I think everyone could learn from the Jackson Police Department, because they stop the traffic and take off their hats in reverence for the funeral procession. Jackson, keep it up.
I'M CALLING to congratulate the Southeast gymnastic team for its recent win in Chicago. They are an exciting team. I hope they we continue to get good coverage from our paper.
I CANNOT believe they are going to name an airport after Ronald Reagan. Is this not the same Ronald Reagan who fired hundreds of air-traffic controllers and had no respect whatsoever for labor negotiations and union workers during the air-traffic controller strike? The only thing they should name after Ronald Reagan is a scab statue.
I JUST watched CNBC business channel the other day, and I noticed that two or three people noted that they liked the way the economy was going and they credited it to having a Democratic president and a Republican Congress. They like it that way. Let's don't stop this market from going up, because that means a lot of good economic conditions in this country.
I'D LIKE to respond to all the Democrats who call in and say it doesn't matter what Mr. Clinton does, it doesn't matter about his sex life, so what if he had a sexual relationship. He looked me in the eye on TV and said he didn't. I believe the man. Doesn't everybody believe him? Why would we defend the guy? Why does everybody want to say so what if he had sex with a young girl? He's already denied it. Let's take that at face value. But if he was lying, goodbye.
TO THE Cape Girardeau City Council concerning the new anti-noise legislation, bring your folding chair and come listen to the lovely cacophony of car horns blaring at Central High School each and every morning around 7:30 -- another fine school tradition that I pay taxes to support.
I WOULD like to comment on an article, "Molestation trial begins for Delta man." I would like to voice my opinion that these articles should be on the front page instead of the article, "Plants confused." For the sake of our children, all parents need to be aware of these people in our community who prey on our children. This should be a headline article instead of on page 10A. Our laws do very little to keep these type of people off the street, so at least when we see their names in print, parents, grandparents and everyone could be more aware of it.
THE AMERICAN people have spoken and stated that as long as the economy is good, they do not care about the honesty, integrity or morality of their leaders. How can the American people ever again sit in moral judgment of the German and Swiss people of the 1930s and 1940s?
I'M A strong supporters of the Clintons and a strong Democrat, but I do think I resent his doing one thing: signing the approval to name the Washington airport after Ronald Reagan when he fired all those controllers, putting them out of work and breaking the union. I hope the ex-controllers sit up and protest most vehemently. That, to me, is like Israel naming their airport Adolph Hitler Airport.
BILL CLINTON keeps saying he needs to get back to his job of running the country and focusing on important things. If he had done this all during his presidency instead of fooling around, he wouldn't be in the trouble he is today.
ANOTHER BLATANT, bold-faced came lie out of Bill Clinton's mouth when he said he was honoring the rules of the investigation. That is a pure, unadulterated lie. The president is exempt from any of those rules. He can defend himself. He can say anything he wants to say about the situation in his defense or against it. So he's lying to us again.
I GREW up in Cape and recently moved back with my wife and children after living elsewhere for the last 20 years. I felt this would be a better place for them to grow up than the city we were living to. My children are going to Alma Schrader School. Having attended Cape public schools my whole life, I remember that there were always cliques of popular kids and also kids who were picked on a lot. And then you had those who fell somewhere in between the groups. I guess this sort of thing happens to a certain extent just about everywhere. However, I must say that I have been thoroughly disappointed with the welcome my children have received at Schrader. The teachers and staff have been more than kind, but many if not most of the children have treated and continue to treat them as outsiders. They have been called names, made fun of and deliberately left out of games, groups and activities. Apparently, many of the parents feel this behavior is acceptable. Some seem to think their financial status somehow entitles them to consider themselves superior to others who may be less fortunate. It is fairly obvious by their behavior that at least some of those attitudes and values are being passed on to their children. Just about anyone in town who's ever attended or had children attend Cape schools readily acknowledges that this mentality exists at Schrader and probably always will. I personally find this unacceptable. My children were normal, happy, healthy and well-adjusted prior to attending this school. My wife and I have had to console a crying child after a rough day at school on more than one occasion. This has been very difficult for all of us. I would ask that any of the Alma Schrader parents and students reading this please examine your behavior and see if any of this applies to you. Have you made an effort not only to accept but to welcome new students and their parents, or have you ignored or been deliberately unkind to them? One day you will move on to the seventh grade and beyond, and you too will find yourself in an unfamiliar environment with many new and unknown faces. I only hope you will be made to feel more welcome and comfortable there than my kids have been made to feel at your school.
CHILD MOLESTATION is a serious problem, and we deserve responsible reporting when anyone is convicted or plea bargains on such charges. The case I'm speaking about was tacked onto an article about a Delta man. We need to know when there is someone in our community who is a threat to our children. We want information, even if that makes the molester uncomfortable. Just think how much harm is done when we are unaware. The charges against John Seabaugh of Millersville for sexual misconduct should have been an article unto itself.
AS I watched the storms across our nation on the weather map that they blame on El Nino, I think of the words of Jesus, "In the last days upon the earth, distress of nations with perplexity, the sea and waves roaring." I believe God controls our weather, not Mother Nature or the myth of global warming. I believe it's punishment because we have a society that doesn't know right from wrong just like in the days of Soddom and Gomorrah. Our nation needs a spiritual revival from the White House to the crack houses and all other houses in between. I pray that it will come.
THIS AREA just went through a terrible tragedy. A young girl lost her life in a car accident. It should not have happened. I feel sorry for all the family. I really think the driving age for teen-agers should be 18. Young folks are just not experienced enough to drive a car without adult supervision at age 16.
DONN MILLER -- though many people including me find most of what he says hard medicine, is saying things that I believe eventually work to our good. In his searching, he has found many questions that we as Christians have either had to deal with in the past or will have to face in the future. So keep searching, because in the Bible God says, "They that search for me will find me when they search for me with their whole heart." We're praying for God to so just that.
PEOPLE ARE willing to overlook Clinton and all his personal and political faults and continue believing he's doing a good job only because he promises to keep their pockets full and their shallow consciences free. They only worry about the me in issues, how it's going to affect me, not the country as a whole. They don't worry how to take care of themselves or how to teach others how to take care of themselves. They're perfectly happy to let someone else do it. Go ahead and continue being gullible and shallow. The Bolsheviks -- pardon me, the Democrats -- only want to be sure you're voting for them each time.
I WANTED to say something about the person who made a comment about telemarketing. Telemarketing is a real job. It is a hard job. You sit most of the day. Your butt gets big, your feet swell, and it's usually done for minimum wage. When you do find someone who is willing to talk to you, we talk to them just like we would a friend. It's not all just because we want to sell something. It is our job, we have bosses, and a lot of times it is not selling anything at all. It is not garbage, and it is a job. It pays the bills, and a lot of people who do telemarketing are going to school.
