Last year they guy played with a broken foot the entire year and this year he's not even good enough to get off the bench. What's the deal?...

Put benched player on the floor

WHAT'S WITH SEMO basketball? How come you've got a guy who was the basketball player of the year for Louisiana sitting on the bench and never gets a chance to play? Last year they guy played with a broken foot the entire year and this year he's not even good enough to get off the bench. What's the deal?

Purse left in theater is returned

WHEN I took my 10-year-old daughter to see "Jackie Brown" on her birthday, she left her new purse on the theater seat. Thanks to the kind lady for bringing it out to the car before we left.

Pet deposits are exorbitant

I FIND it kind of ironic that most of the landlords in this town will not rent to people who have family pets, dogs in particular. When they do rent to pet owners, they want exorbitant deposits. Isn't it bad enough you have to pay the high cost of rent in this town with what wages are in the Cape-Jackson area? You know, a funny thing. I trust and love my dog a whole lot more than I trust and love the landlords in Cape Girardeau.

Unemployed worked can't get benefits

WE READ in the newspaper about unemployment being at a low. I guess this is good news, but what about us unemployed who are unable to draw benefits we are entitled to? I've been out of week for at least five months but cannot draw any unemployment.

Oprah no poster child for eating

I WAS just watching the news and saw the story about Oprah Winfrey and the way she offended all the cattle farmers by saying that she would never eat beef again, and the cattle farmers were upset saying that affected people who would eventually buy beef or were buying beef at the time. I've just got a question for everyone reading your paper. Why would anybody in their right mind listen to Oprah Winfrey about what they were going to eat after the hundreds of pounds that she's lost and gained back? What a joke.

A fable about smoking rights

I JUST read in the Journal of the American Medical Association that secondhand smoke does about a third as much damage to the people as the original smoke does to the smoker. I think it's time that I should tell a little story. Did you ever hear about the two men who were arguing about smoking? One guy said, "I have the right to smoke." The other man said, "Well, I have the right to swing my arms." The one man lit up his cigarette. The other man doubled up his fist and started swinging his arms. When he got within a couple of inches of the guy's nose, the guy jumped back and said, "What are you doing?" The guy said, "You said you had the right to smoke and I have the right to swing my arms, and my right to swing my arms stops where your nose begins, and your right to smoke stops where my nose begins."

Explanation of insurance coverage

THE PERSON who called about the uninsured motorist coverage is only half right. I handle claims for an insurance agency, and uninsured motorist coverage will help you if you happen to be injured in an accident with an uninsured motorist. But if your car has damage to it, then if you expect your insurance company to pay, you had better have collision coverage on your policy.

Socialism does not work

THE PERSON who called in forgot a few things the liberals have done for us. With all the welfare handouts, they have created a class of people totally dependent on government. These people don't know the meaning of work. Young girls don't worry about getting pregnant. The government will pay for their babies. Also there's the matter of the government debt for all these social programs that are a total disaster. What's more important than individuals having the desire to care for themselves instead of depending on government? It's proven socialism, which is close to liberalism, does not work.

Dirty car is evidence of birds

I'M CALLING to inform the person who was worried about the birds in Scott City being gone. Well, I live in this town and trust me, they're back. I just washed my car.

Find comfort in Proverbs

MY HEART goes out to the father who wrote the letter about the Missourian's account of his son's death. Our family also felt the pain of their reckless reporting. I wonder how they would feel if it had happened to them or to someone in their family. I hope you can find comfort in the words of Proverbs 19:5. "A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape."
