JUST WANTED to make a comment on the Cape Girardeau Police Department. They've got an awful good bunch of fine officers working for this city. Support for police department

JUST WANTED to make a comment on the Cape Girardeau Police Department. They've got an awful good bunch of fine officers working for this city. There are a few who want to provoke something whenever they stop, and I hope they weed those folks out, deal with those and go on and make this city a fine city again.

No violence, but sex is OK

DID YOU ever notice how the liberals whine about guns and violence but say nothing of filth and perversion? Mr. Clinton wants less violence in our movies and TV, but says nothing of sex, filthy language or perverted acts or lifestyles on our TV and movies. Anything else goes, but not violence. Wasn't that the way Soddom and Gomorrah were?

Grateful for support of values

I THINK the letter to the Missourian by Don Boyd was great. I agree with his views and comments. I am pleased and grateful there is still someone who remembers values, responsibility and decency.

Fishing is good at Lake Girardeau

I'M CALLING in regard to the article on Lake Girardeau. I would like to contest Mr. Flannery's opinion of the lake. I've been fishing there for five years as a college student. I've caught four bass over six pounds. I've caught two muskies in the last two months. I think Mr. Flannery needs to change his fishing tactics. I think the department is doing a great job of managing the lake as they do at the other lakes. I just wanted to put my two cents in on the lake. I think they're doing a wonderful job. I think Mr. Flannery needs to maybe fish a little harder.

Term has different meaning

I WAS reading the paper. A headline said "Feds put pawn shops under the gun." The phrase "under the gun" is a term that means you are in a safe position. It's a term used by cavalrymen when they were charging the enemy and the artillery was shooting at them. As they got closer, the artillery became less useful because they could not shoot the cavalry charge. So, this term means that they are in a safe position to attack and maybe win the battle.

Dueling oxymorons

TO THE person who called and said that compassionate conservatism is an oxymoron, I would have to counter that so is intelligent liberalism.

Vandalism at Lake Girardeau

THE ARTICLE on Lake Girardeau was right on. The main problem out here is vandalism. People who are opposing the lake up in Millersville ought to learn the lesson that we've learned around here. The lake was destroyed by vandals, and people in the area have to put up with an awful lot of it too. Whenever you get this kind of attraction in there, if it's not maintained or you don't have somebody on the site to keep an eye on it, you get hoodlums. We've had a lot of destruction around here as a result. So, in trying to educate the public, the Department of Conservation is doing the right thing. People should clean up after themselves, but when you get rowdies out, then you're going to have problems. As far as I'm concerned, the people of Millersville are right to fight their lake project. Besides, if Cape needs a lake, they get one every spring near the Diversion Channel.

Thanks for returning purse

HOW GRATEFUL I am to the person who found my purse in the rest room at Kmart and turned it in. I'll be forever thankful to you. God bless.

Warning on fireworks safety

I JUST wanted to let everybody know that fireworks season is upon us. Please use lots of caution. Adults: kids don't need to have fireworks. Think about the valuable money they spend on fireworks. It could turn around that you have to spend 10 to 20 times that amount, possibly ever more, if a child harms himself. So my comment is to put out a warning about fireworks safety.

Looking for justice

I WAS sitting here reading Speak Out and I saw how the police department is described as wonderful. I had to chuckle. I'm very disappointed in our police department. They have failed one of my friends. I hope justice is served.

Use those turn signals

I'M 16, and I've been on the road for about six months now. It seems to me that people out in this area have the worse driving habits of anywhere. The other day, for instance, a guy was across the street from me getting ready to come off Farmington. He did not use his blinker, so I thought he was going straight across as I was going to turn to the right. Instead he turns and almost hits me. I had to slam on my brakes. I then continued on that road and followed him down to an intersection. At the intersection, he did not use his blinker again and pulled out in front of somebody and almost caused another wreck. People need to start using their blinkers. They're there for a reason, to help prevent accidents. One of these days, someone's going to have a pretty bad accident not using their blinkers.

Watch out for repair scams

I'M A single woman calling in regards to automobile repairs that are not being done as promised but were charged for. Just be aware of the mechanics out there who take advantage of people with their automobiles.

Wrong to attack police officers

I WAS very dismayed to find out last week that I'm a racist. It seems that my opinion is that when you gang up and attack police officers while they're doing their sworn duty, you're in the wrong. Apparently that makes me a racist.

Wait-and-see on Yugoslavia

THE ATROCITIES Bill Clinton committed against Yugoslavia that we will be forced to pay for is only a wait-and-see thing. Let's not be too quick in kudos for our so-called victory there. I do not believe Clinton is another Jesus Christ who can change the attitudes of millions who've been fighting and killing each other since before I was born. Don't believe everything you see on television, and believe nothing of what you hear.

Highways are looking like landfills

I JUST wanted to say that as I drive back and forth to work every day, I see how proud Missourians are of their state. It looks more like a landfill every single day. I cannot believe that people would trash a beautiful state like Missouri the way they do.

Thanks for gospel singing

I WANT to say thank you to promoter Wade Cardwell for promoting such a huge event at the Show Me Center with the Heartland Homecoming '99. It was great having the Gaither video artists in Cape Girardeau presenting Christian music. We hope this will become an annual event. Please call the sponsors also and thank them. The price of the tickets were reasonable considering all of the artists who performed and the length of time of the concert.

Thanks for everything, folks

I FIND these truths to be self evident. I've tried marijuana several times but never inhaled. I didn't know Jennifer Flowers. I didn't have sex with that woman. I didn't know about the Chinese contributions or loss of top secrets to the Chinese military. Oral sex isn't sex. What is is. I have duped these morons who still donate at my fund raisers. Thank you. Thank you. Your president.

Be a little more tolerant

I'M CALLING to comment on the actions of a narrow-minded professor who attended a recent showing of the new "Star Wars" movie. I'm very disappointed in his actions, and to think we as parents try to teach our children to do what is right. I hope his selfish actions come back to him. I'm the mother of the special child with extreme developmental delays who sat up front so we wouldn't bother anyone. I can assure we didn't mean to ruin the professor's show. It was just his way of communication. You see, he doesn't speak. He is so delayed we can't even teach him sign language. I'm sure as loud as the surround sound was, it really couldn't have bothered him. I wanted him to know my children and I intended to enjoy the show. My youngest was very upset. However, we made the best of the day. We picked up the original "Star Wars" and went to the park where we had a special day and my son enjoyed playing in the pea gravel. It is a shame that the professor and others like him don't respect others less fortunate. We came to the 1 o'clock show because it was the least busy so we wouldn't bother anyone. We also informed the management that if my son got to loud, we would be pleased to leave in respect for others, and that is what we did. It is very sad that a so-called professor was so unprofessional that day. I saw him storm out like a child throwing a tantrum. Shame on him.

Maybe more want guns now

I HAVE a question concerning the vote on the right to carry concealed guns and the serial killer in Illinois. Now can we have a gun?

Overzealous ticket writer

IN RESPONSE to the person who said don't speed and you won't have to worry about a ticket: I thought the same thing too. It's other things that the Cape Girardeau police get you for. It's rather irritating. No. 1, it's like their word against yours. You hit a yellow light. They say you went through a red light. We have one officer who's a habitual ticket writer. There was one teen-ager who was on a wet street, so he went to start and naturally his tires skidded. He tried to get him on expired license, but it was an Illinois plate. And the same officer got me in court. In all sincerity, it was a green light turned yellow. He said I went on a red light. It's on appeal right now. So the person who said don't speed and don't worry, I'd like to know who's kidding who. I'm very law-abiding. I have the utmost respect for our police department. However, the Cape Girardeau Police Department seems to be giving tickets at the wrong times. When they should, they don't. And when they shouldn't, they do.

Few remember America's greatness

THANK YOU, Southeast Missourian, for letting us express our thoughts and views in Speak Out and letters to the editor. Don Boyd's June 21 letter, "Do you remember when?" was excellent. Our children and others born since the 1950s don't have a clue how great America used to be. Although we have tried to instill morals and values in our children, we have come to realize that they do have minds of their own and will do what they want to do. They are in the "if it feels good, do it" frame of mind that President Clinton is demonstrating so well. My prayer is that before the Lord Jesus Christ comes back, my children will remember their upbringing and begin living the good life and teaching their children to do the same.

They just drive by

IF YOU live in the south end of town and you're thinking of calling the nuisance department about high weeds and grass, grown-up fencerows and junk cars, you will be wasting your time. You'll be told, "We will drive by." That is what they do. Drive by and keep on going. I guess our votes and taxes just don't count in this end of town.

Can't compare teachers, engineers

THE OTHER day you ran an article in your paper comparing teacher salaries with engineers, lawyers. I'm surprised you didn't include doctors in that as well. It was absolutely ridiculous. The courses that people take to become teachers in no way compare to what an engineer studies or what a lawyer studies or doctor or what have you. They get paid for what they study and what they learn and their knowledge. The reason we're putting out students who can't read is not because the teachers aren't getting paid lots of money. It's the interest they have in the students. Years ago, we put out top-notch students, and we had teachers who were more dedicated than what we have today. I'm sorry to say that, but that's a fact.

Paint mascots at SEMO stadium

AS A fan of Southeast Missouri State football I would like to make a suggestion. I think it would be wonderful if the Art Department would paint some symbols or mascots of the university behind the bleachers on the concrete walls. I really think this show a lot of school spirit, and it would also a good chance for the students to display some work so everyone could see it and enjoy it.
