WELL I picked the Missourian up today and guess what the headlines were: Southeast Missouri State University needs more money. I cannot believe they will be granted another increase to do any more building. I would like somebody's opinion on this. University wants more money

WELL I picked the Missourian up today and guess what the headlines were: Southeast Missouri State University needs more money. I cannot believe they will be granted another increase to do any more building. I would like somebody's opinion on this.

Clearing up some information

THE GROUND where the Jackson pool and ball fields are located is the site of the old drive-in theater which was owned by Ms. Winningham. When it closed, the city purchased it at fair market value. The ground where the tennis courts, lake, band shell and soccer field is located was purchased from J.C. Crites at fair market value of land at that time. Ms. Winningham didn't donate the land for Brookside Park. It was purchased by the Jackson city taxpayers. Ms. Winningham did donate a large amount of money towards the veterans memorial which she was very instrumental in getting built along with several other hard-working volunteers. The only land donated for parks in the city of Jackson is Litz Park. The land was donated by the Jack Litzelfelner family. I hope this will clear up some things.

No money for high-tech?

WELL, I see that the high-tech vocational school is not progressing very well into the new century. We're cutting back and cutting back and cutting back. What we have is probably good enough. If we can't progress and become more high-tech, then why spend any dollars at all?

Involved parents mean better students

I WOULD like to make a comment about the Speak Out comment that you can't compare teachers with engineers. I have been a teacher for the last 22 years. Years ago we put out top-notch students, and we had parents who were more dedicated than what we have today. I'm sorry to say that, but that's a fact. We need parents who raise their own children. We need to have both mother and father in the home. We teachers need to see parents at parent-teacher conferences not just in elementary school, but I when the students get into junior and high school. I'm sorry to say that, but that's a fact. If we could see true parent concern and dedication that we had years ago, then we might see top-notch students. But then again, I am probably using the same lack of logic. I see top-notch students, and I'm proud to say I teach five different grade levels of high school and junior high English every day. I've just graduated top-notch students. I'm proud of the time I've given them and the interest that they get from my colleagues.

A travesty of justice

I AM outraged at prosecutor Morley Swingle's decision not to prosecute at least manslaughter in the Poch murder. Shooting through a door without seeing who it was is not reasonable. A reasonable person would at least wait until the intruder has burst through the door. Ramirez is known to kill by beating people to death. Booher could have easily gotten off four rounds and killed Ramirez before he reached Booher. When is Morley up for election? I will vote for anyone who opposes him. This is a travesty of justice. Unspeakable.

Opinion on the shooting

I'VE GOT my say-so about the man who killed the girl down on South Spanish last Wednesday. I think it's murder.

Why include the siblings?

THIS IS in response to the Cape Girardeau School Board acting on the grandfathering. Way to go, Cape Girardeau School Board. Once again, you couldn't stick with your original plan. I agree with allowing the fourth, fifth and sixth graders to be grandfathered, but why in the world did you include siblings? Next fall, the children can thank you when they are sitting in a classroom with 30-plus children.

There's really no surplus

HOW CAN Clinton say there is a surplus of money then tell it will take us 15 years to pay our debts? People, please wake up to the fact that there really isn't any surplus when one owes trillions of dollars. I wonder if he included the interest we have to pay on this money. Another lie?

A predictable outcome

HERE'S A little prediction Speak Out. It seems the FBI is conducting a probe of our police department and the incident on Good Hope Street at the urging of some people within our community. The FBI will find no evidence of wrongdoing, and those same people who urged that this probe be conducted will express outrage. How's that for a prediction?

Close dangerous entrance

WHEN IS the city of Cape Girardeau going to close the Independence Street entrance to Kmart? I work near that very busy and congested area, and it seems several times a week there is an accident at that location. I strongly recommend that the city close that entrance on Independence. It is costing automobile drivers a lot of money in insurance claims to repair their vehicles. Just last week, two vehicles involved in an accident were so heavily damaged they had to be towed away.

We've got some good people too

I WANT to thank the nice, honest person who found my check at Walgreens and turned it in. The check amount was for $260, and I had already endorsed it with my name and account number. We always read and hear about all the bad people in the world, but this person proves once again we've got some good people too. Thank you so much, whoever you are, and God bless you for honesty.

Overrun with politicians

I HAD a funny feeling the other night. I thought Cape Girardeau was going to come to an Armageddon-like end. I didn't know why until I read in Gary Rust's column that there were an inordinate number of heavyweight politicians in town. Divine intervention must have saved us.

Concert was worth the money

THIS IS in response to the people who thought that the tickets to Heartland Homecoming '99 Christian music event at the Show Me Center were overpriced. We felt that considering that with 10 professional artists performing it was fairly reasonable. The length of time of the concert was exceptional. Thanks to Wade Cardwell for bringing the concert to our area.

This is no deal for elderly

SO THE elderly are going to pay $24 a month or $288 a year for $712 worth of medications. Has someone forgotten the price of prescriptions? My one prescription is $456 a year, and most seniors have at least three to seven prescriptions. I thought for a minute we really counted.
