MY HAT comes off. I take my hat off to Jim Drury for putting his money and energies where his mouth is. He's willing to fight for and pay the price for what he believes. There are too many others who are only willing to put your money where their mouths are. Jim Drury, keep up the fine work, and thanks for all you've done in the past...

Hats off to Jim Drury

MY HAT comes off. I take my hat off to Jim Drury for putting his money and energies where his mouth is. He's willing to fight for and pay the price for what he believes. There are too many others who are only willing to put your money where their mouths are. Jim Drury, keep up the fine work, and thanks for all you've done in the past.

It's a matter of power

REGARDING JIM Drury, you have to understand the Drury boys, especially Jim and Charles. I've always admired and respected them for their hard work and their ability to make money and their know-how to make money. On the other hand, I realize that anything they do, they want to make money out of it. What you have to remember about those two is they loathe power, and they want you to know they have power. They like to use power. With all the work they've done, with all the ability they have, they still use power.

Unnecessary potshots

WHY DID David Copperfield feel it was necessary to hint at lesbianism and take potshots at the president in his performance in Cape Girardeau? His talent certainly could raise him above this cheapness. If we cannot respect the man in the White House, let's please respect the office.

U.S. attorneys involved

WHAT IS going to happen to the U.S. attorneys who use the government 800 number and their official letterhead to campaign against Proposition B?

In support of Drury

I WAS just calling to show my support for Mr. Drury. As far as the River Campus issue, I don't think the city should pursue it. He wouldn't be put in this position if the supporters hadn't lied to everybody when they told us that if both issues didn't pass the voters, it would all be dropped. Both issues did not pass, but they just figured another way around it. I'm all for Mr. Drury.

Thanks for special columns

I JUST wanted to say I enjoyed Sam Blackwell's April 8 column very much. It was nice tribute to his old friend. Also, thank you for putting in a column by Jean Bell Mosley on Sunday morning. They are always enjoyable to read.

Everybody has to work

THIS IS to the person who says Clinton is doing a good job. Wake up. Ask yourself why is employment low? Know why? A husband can't make a living for his family anymore. Both have to work. More people are going bankrupt than ever before. More people are borrowing than ever before and going deeper in debt. So please tell me how the economy can be so good. Some Republicans and Democrats would vote for a rattlesnake as long as it was on their ticket.

Should have fired Ken Starr

THE ONLY criticism I have against President Clinton is that he did not fire Ken Starr, or Janet Reno because she didn't fire Ken Starr. Like Harry Truman said, he wasn't about to turn our government over to the military. He wasn't about to do that. Well, I think President Clinton was so embarrassed he did not want to turn our government over to Ken Starr and special prosecutors and the Republican bullies. He had our confidence, and we were on his side. He should have fired Kenneth Starr. Starr's argument was with Bill Clinton, but he disrespected the office of the president of the United States. The president should not have been put in that position by Starr. It was a sin. It was a wrong, just as wrong as the president, only maybe worse.

Was it wagging or not?

IN A recent column David Limbaugh seemed to say that President Clinton did not wag the dog in order to get us into Kosovo. Later on in the same column, he said Clinton did just that.

Maintaining our rights

SINCE SOCIALISTS succeeded again in tearing down our Second Amendment rights by defeating Prop B, let me offer another idea. When preparing to travel across the country, I called the ATF. I asked if it was legal at a federal level to transport a gun across state line. They said yes. Then I asked if it was legal to keep a loaded gun in my motel room or trailer at night. Again they said yes because it's our temporary home and we have a right to protect it and our families. Considering that logic, are not our private vehicles an extension of our homes and private property? Therefore, shouldn't we have the same rights to protect ourselves while traveling, even locally? If you agree, contact not only your state but federal elected officials and demand that right. And the national law should override any state or local laws like that stupid one in Cape Girardeau. They say you can have an exposed gun in your car but no bullets. Think about it. How dumb.

Very little influence

I'M CALLING in response to people who continue to call into Speak Out about how good times are. They are good. But saying that Clinton is the reason for this shows people's ignorance. Clinton has very little to do with the economy, as does any other president. If you want to name a person who gets credit for the economy, it would be Alan Greenspan in calling interest rates. Congress has a fair amount of influence. The president has very little influence. So these people, when they say this are either ignorant or stupid. If they refuse to investigate and find out the facts, they're in bad shape.

Take a risk, throw the ball

IT'S DISGUSTING to think that all these ballplayers think they're such ballplayers that they can't pitch to Mark McGwire, they have to walk him. I think if they think they're so good to be a ballplayer, then take the challenge.

Lots of sex on TV

LAST WEEK, Fox ran a program called sexiest commercials. Immediately following that, KFVS ran a program about sex, love and reproduction, both containing very explicit material. Then Fox had a program called "Sex and Fast Cars." I thought this is why we put the pornographic magazines on the top shelf so our kids can't reach them.

They've done it again

WELL, CAPE Girardeau, you've done it again. You let Drury build a six-story building. We said no, but all of a sudden that changed. I wonder why. Now Southeast Missouri State University can't pay for the seminary deal. What are we going to do next? Hey, listen. I need a new house. You want me to put that before the board? The thing is, I just don't have enough pull with the mayor because I don't like him and I know his family. Anyway, that's they way they make a living. Maybe one of these days, it will make sense to you all.

They never give up

YOU'VE GOT to hand it to those pro-Proposition B people. Even though I voted against it, you've got to admire their never-give-up spirit. They're still running pro-Proposition B advertisements on television.

Suing everyone in sight

I SAW something on the news that just sickened me. The parents of the girls who were killed by Michael Carneal in the Paducah School shooting are suing not only the friends, classmates, teachers and parents of Carneal but also attempting to sue TV stations, movie studios, video game companies and Internet sites. I mean, why not just sue the doctor who delivered him? This is completely ridiculous. If the material that people watch on TV, see in movies and play on video games drives them to violence, then we would all be packing guns to school, work and the mall and gunning people down. I don't know why Michael Carneal shot those girls, but I'm pretty sure he didn't get the idea from one of his school teachers. Those girls' parents need to realize that the money they would possibly get with from this lawsuit isn't going to make their children's deaths hurt any less, and it sure isn't going to bring them back. Parents, your part of this trial is over. Let God handle the rest and let your children rest in peace.

Learning about geography

I'M HAVING a great deal of difficulty learning to pronounce Kosovo. But don't worry, I'll get it right. It took me a while to learn to say Vietnam too.

Living proof that herbs work

IN REPLY to the article on herbs, I'm a living example that dietary supplements are safe and most definitely work. A car wreck left me disabled. Doctors said I would be in a wheelchair within a year. That was 15 years ago. I walk with a cane at times, but I'm up and going thanks to glucosamine. I'm a diabetic, and Resulin is indeed a horrible prescription that was pulled off the market in 1995 in England. I was on this one year. And though it does work, I stayed in constant pain in the liver area. Within two weeks off of this medicine, the pain is completely gone. I take an herb and two minerals that control my blood sugar with no side effects. In reading about Claritin, I found a side effect was back pain. I went off it and five other medications. My back pain left, and my mind is clearer than it's been in years. Thank God for the wonderful herbs, minerals and the leaves of the trees for our healing.

Let's exempt the cities

THE ONLY reasonable agenda now is to wait until Carnahan is replaced and then reintroduce a concealed-carry bill that would exempt St. Louis and Kansas City. Then we can sit back and see who's crime rate really goes down, the big cities where criminals know the citizens are disarmed, or the outstate populace where the criminals never know who is armed.

Baseball and messy dogs

BASEBALL SEASON has started at our city parks. Last year, we fought the dogs. People would come, bring in dogs and wouldn't clean up after their dogs. We stepped in it. We want to go there and watch our kids play baseball, but they have the park smelling from the dogs. It's terrible. Can the city do something? What can be done about the people bringing their dogs there?

Diverting our attention

I WANT to comment about the Chinagate coverup where we sold top secret military secrets to the Chinese for campaign contributions. I just want to say we're now bombing Yugoslavia to get that off the front page, and it's done a good job. The Chinese butcher has been over here, and none of that stuff about how they stole our secrets has been brought out. Clinton, in order to keep all of his scandals off the front page, will keep this war going if he gets a chance. He'll put your sons right there on the front line, a place where he wouldn't go or send his daughter.

There goes the surplus

WITH ALL the war in Kosovo, we now know how Clinton had planned to use our Social Security surplus, this so-called Social Security surplus. After all, a cruise missile costs $1 million and he's just started. If we win, we will then rebuild, take care of the refugees and send peacekeeping forces. This will, of course, cost much more. All of you Clinton supporters who worry about using our money to help foot the poor and education, remember this: Clinton has just set fire on all your hard-earned tax money. Think about this on April 15. And all of this is just to leave a legacy as a great world leader.
