I HAVE a comment about the Mississippi River bridge between Illinois and Missouri. The only way to save the bridge is to stop the big trucks from crossing that bridge. Those big, heavy trucks are the reason it is in the shape it is in now. So if we are going to keep it standing for three or four more years, they need to stop those trucks. It may be hard on the trucking business, but we need to think of the coming three or four years for people who need to travel it every day for business and health reasons. Those big trucks can find an alternate route.
WHEN OUR oldest child entered SEMO in the fall of 1990, tuition was $745 a semester. With the rate increase, our youngest, who is entering college in the fall of 1999, will have to pay $1,612 for 15 hours. Tuition has more than doubled in nine years. Actually, it is a 117 percent increase. In comparison, our family income has only increased 40 percent in the same nine years, and that is mainly because my wife started working part-time. I'll bet the professors salaries have not increased by 117 percent in nine years. They probably haven't even increased by 40 percent. Where does the money go? I guess SEMO can't stand that people will get tax breaks with the Hope and lifetime learning education credits. They have to get their share of that too.
IN REBUTTAL to the person saying cats should be hit by cars. The other day I saw a car jump the curb to hit a black-and-white cat on Bertling. I wonder if this motorist is fully aware that it's against the law to deliberately kill an animal.
TO THAT yellow-dog Democrat who was worrying about George Bush Jr. getting in and everybody would be out in soup kitchens: We've already got soup kitchens here in Sikeston, and I think they've got a couple in Cape. At least George Bush Jr. is not a sodomite. He didn't bring America to its knees down to Soddom and Gomorrah. That's what this boy's done -- the sorriest president to ever set foot in the oval office, William Jefferson Clinton.
IF A husband says something and his wife is not there to hear it, is he still wrong?
I WANT to congratulate Larry Crader and Robert Smith, the mechanics on the Jackson school buses, for their winning of the Fleet of Excellence award. Keep up the good work, guys.
THIS IS for Joe Sullivan regarding his March 19 column. I want to compliment him on his writing. That was thoroughly enjoyable about the VCR and the coffee pot and all that. I totally enjoyed that writing. I'd also like to tell Mr. Sullivan that as we get older, we're like fine wine and fine cheese. We are more particular, we're more expensive and we're harder to get.
I WAS in a store shopping. I think the managers need to pay more attention to their checkers on their attitude and the way they treat customers. It's losing them business because I have switched from one grocery store to another grocery store, and the reason why is because every time I went in this other one, I was treated very rudely.
