DEMOCRATS WANT to censure the president for one reason and one reason only, to protect themselves. They know, given Clinton's track record, that another scandal is highly probable. They would have to explain to their constituents why they voted to retain Clinton in office in the first place. If a censure resolution is passed, then Democrats will be able to tell their voters that they did indeed punish the president. It might be tomorrow or it might be five years from now, but eventually the truth will come out about this con artist. and these Democrats will be made to look like the fools they are.
I AM in my mid-40s and have worked 18 years at various jobs making $5.50 to $6.50 an hour. I just got my Social Security report, and it said if I keep working the way I am, I will get around $550 a month. Do you know what? My first husband worked at Procter & Gamble, and since I was married to him 10-plus years, I could get some of his Social Security. Now you know why I'm staying home with my child. By the time you pay the government, baby-sitting, buy your clothes, lunch every day and gas money, you don't have much left. No, I'm not rich except for the love I see in my child's eyes. I do not owe anybody, and I do own a fairly new home. I don't have to buy $50 jeans or pay for a $25,000-plus vehicle to make me feel important. Yes, I do know people who don't have a choice and have to work thanks to our wonderful government. Besides, Social Security may not be there when we get that age anyway, and we'll all be in the same boat.
WHY DO people acquire a dog, put it in their yard on a leash or in a pen and leave it to annoy their neighbors? Dog owners should keep their dogs inside or keep them quiet. I can go to any room in my house and hear a cacophony of dogs. People should be more considerate of others.
I'M CALLING in regard to the comment about protecting your Social Security number. I work in a business here in town, and we are required to ask for some form of identification -- Social Security number, driver's license number or credit card number -- in case that check does come back so that we can track you down. You're right, you do not have to give your Social Security number, but if you do not want it printed on your checks or your driver's license, then have it removed. You may request that it taken off your driver's license and another number put in its place. We also have rules that we have to follow.
TO THE Republican Party, how dare you bring a case so weak, so slight, so dirty, so intrusive, so rotten, so ugly, so without constitutional merit and so removed from any question of abuse of power? You've tied up Congress, the nation and the presidency over something that involved only one man's personal life. You've invaded my home and exposed matters that should have been left between a husband and wife. Who are you people, and what gave you the right to do this?
YOU PEOPLE who are so delighted that Bill Clinton got away with lying under oath and with obstructing justice may as well never again call him President Clinton. You must now call him King Clinton or King Slick Willie. He is no longer a president. He is a king, because you'll be thrown in jail for things that he got away with.
THIS IS a plea to the Cape Girardeau Police Department. The neighborhoods of Themis, Boxwood and Sycamore Circle are becoming gang and drug infested. Within the past 12 months, there have been a murder, a violent beating and numerous incidents of property damage. Much more goes on, but not all of it is published. The majority of the people who live in this area are hard-working, good people. Please help us keep our neighborhood safe. We need you.
HOW CAN we keep law and order in this country when the criminals have more rights than the policemen? Mike Tyson is going back to prison, but he's going to be let out of jail for his fights. That is a bunch of crap.
I TOTALLY agree with Michael Simmons' letter to the editor. Our Founding Fathers wanted people to be able to practice the religion of their choice. Our country's motto is "In God We Trust." Separation of church and state only means that we do not have to belong the church that the state tells us to and the state doesn't support only one church as it does in some other countries.
THIS IS to answer the question regarding the real flowers or silk flowers for Valentine's Day. To the husband who asked: Your wife is right. I wouldn't want to know that I'm receiving the same old bouquet year after year. Valentine's Day is once a year. Your wife deserves to have a fresh bouquet of flowers picked out just for her by you, her Valentine. Don't think twice. Get to the flower shop while the selection is still good.
IT'S SUCH a shame that the Republican senators had absolutely no choice other than to let that no-good off. I don't know why in the world they can't just declare a mistrial or something and try him all over again.
I RECENTLY read an editorial where the Southeast Missourian supports the state denying state workers the right to unionize. Unfortunately, it's another case where the Missourian completely misunderstood the actual issue. This bill would not only allow state workers to organize. As the Missourian claims, the state workers are pretty fairly paid. But it also would allow for county and municipal workers to unionize. And if the Missourian has paid any attention to some the articles it's published in the past regarding salaries, there is a great disparity in salaries among workers from one municipality to the next or from one county to the next in similar jobs. Unionization would provide these people a method by which to rectify that situation. The greatest issue for most people in this state is not the issue of state workers unionizing, but workers more on the local level.
