I FEEL and I hope that the voters will respond with a vengeance in the next election, remembering the misuse and misconduct of Kenneth Starr. His actions can be compared to when Richard Nixon turned the IRS and FBI loose on his political opponents and when J. Edgar Hoover placed tapes in Martin Luther King Jr.'s bedroom. The Republican elephant has trampled once again on the private, constitutionally protected rights of every American citizen. If they can do this to the president of the United States, they can do it to anyone. The sooner the public realizes this and puts a stop to it and punishes the abuse the better. Kenneth Starr should be punished.
THE MISSOURI Department of Transportation is spending $28,801 to plant 180 trees. Who is planting these trees? They have hired someone to plant these 180 trees. That's $160 per tree. Could they not call the Missouri Department of Conservation? They will plant trees at no cost. If the Department of Transportation has that much extra money to spend on planting a $160 tree, why don't they spend the money somewhere else? It's not their money. It's our money. They've got extra money, and they're spending $160 to plant one tree. That is outrageous. The Department of Transportation needs to think twice before it does a project like this or get other input.
I WAS disturbed when I read Speak Out recently. Someone commented that the pope should take the murderers where he lives and that the convicted murderer was judged to die and should die. To my knowledge, no one but God can judge us and give us the consequences we deserve.
ANOTHER CHURCH recommendation. I too am a newcomer to Cape and would like the born-again oldsters and all others to know that they'll receive a warm, loving welcome at Mount Auburn Christian Church on Mount Auburn Drive. Being a non-denominational church, the focus is on God's word. Pastor Wes Wright paints a clear picture as he tells it like it is. If you believe in God's word and unity and Jesus Christ, you'll feel right at home at Mount Auburn Christian. You'll even be greeted at the door.
HOW DO we go about getting some trees planted for sound and vision barriers along Shawnee Parkway, the stretch that run behinds Jefferson School and Minnesota Street and especially Brink Street. The noise from the traffic is very loud. Those 18-wheelers are especially loud when they gear down to slow down or stop. We can hear the traffic noise all the time, even with our windows down, and we live four blocks away from Brink Street. The noise from the traffic is really bad now. Think of what it will sound like when the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge opens. Why do the mobile homes and Chelsea Drive residents get relief from the traffic noise and we don't here on Brink Street and Minnesota Street and the Jefferson School area? I guess I will have to get in touch with the state about the loud traffic noise in our area.
THANKS FOR front-page coverage on teen-age drivers. It is obvious that driver's ed or some type of instruction needs to be placed back into the school system.
I AGREE with the pastors wishing people would show more respect for the Lord and house of worship by dressing neater, but I'd rather have everyone in dressy slacks than in short skirts and dresses and shorts too short to cover the subject. Shorts should definitely not be worn to church as they, in most cases, are worn to advertise the body.
I READ about the crash on the Mississippi River bridge. On the day before, there was a red pickup with an Illinois license plate coming to Cape. All the way across the bridge he drove on the double yellow line. Its a wonder someone didn't hit him or he didn't hit them. There needs to be more control over how people drive on the bridge. They act like the side rails are going to jump off and get them.
I'M CALLING about the death penalty. I am a Christian, and I believe in the death penalty. The reason I do is because in the Old Testament God does not take things like that lightly. If you read the Old Testament, you will find that God destroyed whole nations because of their immorality. If God can do that, I don't think the death penalty's wrong. You need to read in the Old Testament and find out what God believes in.
JUST READ about unfriendly churches. Goodness. Now I know you said that wasn't the only reason you went to church, but I'll tell you what, you shouldn't pick your church or your faith just because you like somebody who goes there or just because you like the preacher, because we don't all live forever. You're going to have fall back on your faith sometime.
