IN ANSWER to those born-again oldsters (and youngsters) looking for a church home, come to Maple Avenue United Methodist Church at the corner of Cape Rock Drive and Jean Ann Drive. My husband and I visited this church about five years ago. We have stayed for many reasons. First and foremost, we found a church family interested in the Lord and one another. Yes, the church has assigned greeters each Sunday, but you will find the whole church is filled with unassigned greeters. We are a small congregation with a building program for the future in our minds and prayers. Come and see us. You'll never again be able to say that the churches of Cape are unfriendly!
I WANTED to say thank you to the lady who found my red and blue wallet on either on Herman or Louis Street. I wanted to thank her for being so honest in returning the wallet. God bless you.
I HATE to say it, but I do hope even the pope asked for divine intervention in the decision to press Mel Carnahan to pardon that drug-dealing murderer. It really angers me that this decision was made. I thank God Almighty that the pope didn't press Carnahan to pardon Clinton. Now, wouldn't that be something?
THE DEMOCRATIC Party has certainly distinguished itself in the Bill Clinton impeachment matter. Distinguished themselves, that is, as the lawless party. They've tried to take what is basically a ethical, moral and legal issue and made it a political issue and have done everything on strict party lines. If these people truly believe the ridiculous comments they've made -- that is the senators and representatives who represent the Democratic party and Democratic national leaders -- I certainly want no part of them. If they do not believe and are simply parroting Bill Clinton's legion of liars, I want no part of them. I don't believe I'll be able to support another Democrat. What they've done is make a mockery of the American legal system in defense of this man. The leaders of America are not elected to follow the public opinion polls that may or may not have validity in the first place. They're supposed to follow their conscience and have a judgment of right and wrong. I believe we all know that Bill Clinton has committed perjury, has committed obstruction of justice and certainly deserves to be expelled from the office of president. He's made a disgrace of himself, shamed our country and failed his family and the office of the presidency. He needs to be removed. But the Democrats are trying to make it a political issue and have supported their man. Unfortunately, their man is not the right man. It's a sad day for this country.
IT'S NICE to see that our country does not allow our children to pray in schools, but the urging of a religious leader will commute a convicted killer's death sentence and allow him to live off the taxpayers for the rest of his natural life. Wow. God bless America.
I'M CALLING in regard to the people angry about Gov. Mel Carnahan letting the guy live. I'm appalled. I'm a Catholic, and I believe the death penalty is wrong. I think it should be done away with, period, no matter how heinous the crime. I think those people are immoral and just wrong to think that even though he killed someone he should be killed, because Jesus taught us not to take an eye for an eye or tooth for a tooth. If someone slaps you, turn the other cheek and let them slap you again. I'm just appalled at how many people have called to be angry that he let him live. I would just like to voice my opinion and say that the death penalty is wrong, and it should be done away with.
I'D LIKE to respond with advice on church friendliness. I agree with the old people. It's not just in Cape that there are unfriendly churches. It's also in Jackson. I moved to this one church because I thought it was a friendly church. That's not the only reason I go to church, but it seems people don't have the time to speak to you or ask about you or whatever. If you're sick, they don't come to visit you, and they barely speak when they see you on the street. It's really confusing, and I hope this doesn't rub off on the young people like the older couple said.
SOMEONE NEEDS to stick a pin in Ken Starr. He thinks he is the king of the country. Send him to Siberia with a one-way ticket. He's completely out of control. He's crazy.
I WOULD like to comment on the polls that have been running showing the people in favor of Clinton. I have just returned from a tour with about 80 people in one of our states outside the continent. Nowhere in over two weeks did I hear anyone say he thought Clinton was not guilty and should be let go. It just doesn't seem true, all the reports they put out about everybody being in favor of Clinton being left alone. I think they're rigged some way.
I WANTED to call and make a public apology to God and Christians everywhere. You see, I apparently haven't read my Bible right or I would have realized it was written, Thou shalt not be a Democrat. I also didn't realize that it was not in the Lord's will to pray for our rulers but that we were supposed to work at destroying not only the man, but also his family. I now know I should have supported those who were more obsessed with destroying the family of our president, those who show a total lack of respect for his position and those that chose to expose us to much worse pornography through the release of those transcripts. You see, I've chosen not to view them because I'm not into voyeurism and I don't wish my mind exposed to thoughts that peek into another's bedroom or their sexual antics. Instead, I pray for those who have vengeance in their heart in order to gain what has not been handed to them on a silver platter. I was taught that unless you let the Lord work, what you wish for someone else would come back on you instead. I guess I have lived my entire life in deceit, as it is obvious that the God many Republicans are serving is not the same God I have been serving. To those Republicans, I beg your forgiveness for being so deceived. I only ask that you allow me the time to become as perfect as you are so I too may work at destroying others without regard or consideration and have no conscience about it. Would you please pray for me?
I WANT to commend Gov. Mel Carnahan for commuting the death sentence of Darrell Mease, condemned killer, following the plea of Pope John Paul for mercy. I object to capital punishment upon moral grounds. We are the only western civilization that has the death penalty. It is barbaric, and I object to the methods used. I agree with Sen. Barbara Boxer of California: "I do not believe in killing children." Retarded or mentality ill individuals should not be executed, and it has been done. It is obvious it is not a deterrent to crime. I do not condone murder or heinous crimes. I do think a life sentence without any chance of parole will do more to punish someone than execution. Execution also costs more than a life sentence. There are people who are not guilty who are sent to prison and even given the death penalty. Sometimes it takes years to find out the truth about one's guilt, and often it's too late for justice. The American Bar Association, the American Civil Liberties Union and many church groups and others also object to capital punishment. I believe every person should have every avenue of appeal to prevent miscarriage of justice.
I JUST saw the Speak Out comment about the people who were saying they could not find a church that was friendly. They should visit our church at First Assembly of God on Mount Auburn Road. We do have greeters at each door, plus there's always someone who wants to shake your hand. We'd love to have you.
THANK YOU for running the article about the Pope and Dr. Clayton Smith. It is so nice to see Christian denominations talking good about each and admitting that we believe the same things, that we want to spread the news of the gospel, that we want to worship God and love our neighbors as ourselves. Thank you for running a good article.
I'D LIKE to comment on SEMO University's new Southern Illinois scholarship program. I think that is a fantastic move. Those extra 100 or so students a year will bring hundreds of thousands of dollars a year into Cape Girardeau and Missouri. As a small business owner and longtime Missourian, I'm happy that the university's doing something to keep my profits high, my taxes low. That's a good deal.
THE CANCELLATION of the execution so many object to makes me think the Pentecostal-praying mother of the inmate was heard and answered by God using the pope and governor as his helpers. It just lets us know who is really in charge: not people who want revenge, politicians, Democrats or Republicans. And maybe God is giving us a message: forgiveness and mercy.
THE CANADA geese have once again arrived, eating in the fields what the farmers have left behind. The hunters are arriving with guns protruding from the windows of the trucks as they park along the fields, stalking the geese. The hunters occasionally fire attempting to scare the geese into the air so they will fly over the trucks and can be shot. Otherwise, the hunters cross private property or intrude on private property attempting to get to the geese. The sheriff's department has called the conservation department. The conservation department has an answering machine on. There's nobody to help. Looks like we're going to have take things in our own hands.
